The film is based on the Chinese role-playing video game series "GuJian" (Pinyin: Gu Jian Qi Tan), developed by Aurogon and published by Gamebar. "Gujian3" was the first game with English subtitles. The video games also spawned a Chinese television series Swords of Legends (2014).
The film was shot in 90 days between October 2016 and February 2017. The CGI-heavy project was in post-production when director Renny Harlin had already started filming his third Chinese film, Bodies at Rest (2019).
