A poster for "The Atoning" can be seen in an early scene from John Travolta's "The Fanatic". "The Fanatic" was shot in Birmingham, AL where "The Atoning" star, Virginia Newcomb, resides. A local set dresser working on "The Fanatic" contacted Michael Williams, director of "The Atoning", to use posters from his films in the set decoration.
Residents of West Point, Mississippi lent furniture to be used in the film. Moreover, the filmmakers only had three days before shooting to fill the house featured in this movie with said furniture.
The first draft of the script was written in two and a half weeks.
