Karen Goldfarb's "Fascination: Helena's Story," is one of the most unexpectedly moving, emotionally harrowing works I've ever seen. The story, told in first person by Helena, a survivor of the Holocaust now in her 90's, is so clear-eyed and rich with detail, that it completely transports you back in time, more than any Hollywood film ever possibly could. Karen keeps her camera trained on Helena the entire film, only occasionally pulling away to show a photograph or scene from Helena's ballroom dancing. There are no camera tricks or special effects, just an incredible, true life story of one person's perseverance through the greatest hell anyone could possibly imagine. Helena came out the other side with her spirit still in contact. Her story should not be missed by anyone.
