Executive Producers Joshua D. Maurer, Alixandre Witlin and David Stern originally acquired the literary rights from the Fitzgerald estate. Maurer then pitched the series concept to Sony TriStar Television exec Suzanne Patmore who bought in in the room for immediate development. Patmore asked Maurer who was his first choice as show runner and Maurer replied Billy Ray. Coincidentally, Witlin's aunt was best friends with Ray's mother in law and so Maurer reached out to Billy, pitched him the concept over the phone and Ray asked him to messenger over a copy of the novel right away. The next day, Ray called him saying he was on board.
