The plot is based on a true story and the related book "La garçonne et l'assassin" (The Boyish Woman and the Assassin), written by two historians (Virgili and Voldman, 2011).

The original title "Nos années folles" (Our wild/crazy years) is a multiple play on words:

• "Années folles" is how the 1920s are called in France (equivalent of "Roaring Twenties"), since the action occurs from WWI to 1929;
• It refers to the wild and crazy character of Paul as well as of the story;
• "Folle" is a pejorative word for gay.
