Self - Host
- Roger Ebert - Host: Clint Eastwood is a secret service man who blames himself for the Kennedy assassination and doesn't want another president to die in "In the Line of Fire", one of the new movies we'll be reviewing this week on "Siskel & Ebert". And we'll also take a look at a new film about a friendship between a boy and a whale. I'm Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times.
- Gene Siskel - Host: Sorta reminds me of OUR relationship.
- Gene Siskel - Host: [reviewing "Free Willy"] I didn't buy the kid, I didn't buy him as a "movie tough" kid. That was where my problem started. And again, naturally, I'm involved in the beginning with a boy and his dog story, or a boy and his whale story. Of course. But then, I want it to be a little complicated, have a little surprise. I thought this was a straightforward march to the big finale scene, and so, when they're taking the whale to freedom, my heart wasn't rooting. And I can't deny it, and I'm not gonna pretend, because i know little kids are gonna like it, I...
- Roger Ebert - Host: I KNOW little kids are gonna like it. And big kids are gonna like it too. In fact, I think this is actually a better movie than "Rookie of the Year".
- Gene Siskel - Host: No, I, I thought "Rookie of the Year", they're both formula pictures, I thought "Rookie of the Year" was more inventive along the way.
- Roger Ebert - Host: It's not every day... you can say it's a formula picture.
- Gene Siskel - Host: Oh, it is.
- Roger Ebert - Host: But on the other hand...
- Gene Siskel - Host: The whale's captive, the whale's free, I mean that's...
- Roger Ebert - Host: Oh come on, that's not quite that simple.
- Gene Siskel - Host: Oh, it's pretty that simple.
- Roger Ebert - Host: Come on, what about those long nights that he spends getting to know the whale?
- [Gene chuckles]
- Roger Ebert - Host: Y'know, when he's away from home and he plays his harmonica? Those are magical scenes.
- Gene Siskel - Host: Lemme tell ya this, the other thing is, I had a problem with the whale as a creature to be loved. Uh, gimme Flipper any time, is what I'm saying.
- Roger Ebert - Host: Well... I just don't know where to start in arguing with THAT one.
