The Last Door is an 8-bit point-and-click adventure game, with a narrative style based around the works of H.P. Lovecraft. It is a horror game, but not in the sense of being scary or anything of sorts. Intead, it hinges on the fear of the unknown, and horrifies the players through narrative, rather than through jump scares. The first season is broken into four distinct episodes, each one taking place in a new location, following the protagonist, Jeremiah Devitt, as he slowly unfurls the greater truth behind his friend's suicide. The story is very well written, and would stand very well on its own as a book or a movie/television show. However, it takes advantage of the graphical limitation of 8-bit pixel art to leave multiple things for the player's imagination- and the game greatly benefits from it. The game's opening act is Anthony Beechworth hanging himself, and the pixel art style leaves a lot of that scene to the imagination. And speaking of atmosphere- the soundtrack is absolutely perfect for this game. Since the game is set in the 19th century, it is obvious that the soundtrack is composed of classical music. However, none of the pieces is in any way orchestral- quite the opposite. Most of them are limited to a piano, a violin, or both. And the simplicity of the soundtrack adds to the great atmosphere that the game builds up throughout its run. The game is not very long. It should take between 4-6 hours to complete. In summary, this game is an absolute masterpiece for anyone who loves Mystery, Horror, Lovecraft, or even a good narrative in general. It manages to hook you up with many mysteries, and manages to pay them off well at the end of the second season. Would absolutely recommend anyone buy it, both seasons will cost you only around 10 usd, which is cheap for the amazing experience that it offers. Hats off for everyone who was a part of the development of this wonderful game.
