    Interesting premise, bad execution

I started watching this show because the plot summary that netflix gave made me interested. The idea of death row inmates all coming to fight one guy sounded really interesting (netflix made it sound like it wasn't a competition but they all just suddenly wanted to kill him because they heard about him and wanted to fight him and he had to fight all of them) the real plot is still interesting though, the death row inmates, a couple other people, and Baki all fight each other in a competition that doesn't have a set time or location so a fight can start at any moment meaning you have to always be on your toes.

So what's the problem? Well Baki isn't all that interesting of a character and we barely find anything out anything about him in the first episode because it spends most of the episode showing the inmates escaping. Obviously, we are mainly here for the fights but a show or movie needs a good plot before, during, and after the fight or else the fight and the character(s) in the fight(s) won't be as interesting. Just imagine how uninteresting the world tournament in dragon ball would be if we barely learned anything about Goku before the tournament and/or if the plot before, during, and after the tournament wasn't good either. Some people could make the argument that since the reason you are watching the show are for the fights and so I should focus on that instead of the plot, well the problem is the fights aren't even entertaining to watch. I don't mind pure martial arts based fights(I love shows like cobra kai and orginal dragon ball that was mostly martial arts at least at first).

I didn't even finish the show because I just stopped caring about it. Maybe I will finish it in the future but right now I just don't want to watch it because it's just not engaging or entertaining.

    Worth watching

It's true, it doesn't have a great storyline, and a lot of stuff that happens doesnt make any sense at all. But it is worth watching. Its violent and crazy maybe even a little bit bizarre at times, but it makes me feel like what I would have imagined when I was younger playing around acting as if I was a super powerful ninja fighter or something, I know it is weird but that's what I like about it.

    Wasted potential.

"Baki" had the potential to be a very good anime.

The story of a boy training to one day beat his own father could have been brought up really well.

Unfortunately, this potential was not used.

"Baki" somehow can't decide whether it wants to be a pure fighting anime or a deep anime.

Sometimes you have the feeling that you can't get out of the exaggerated fights and sometimes you have the feeling of falling asleep because nothing is happening.

The main character also just seems stupid and testerone controlled.

That's why I couldn't watch the anime to the end.

If you're looking for good fighting animes, I think you'd definitely be better off with "Kengan Ashura" or "Megalo Box.

Baki is exactly what it's supposed to be but this season has some issues

    • ''Baki'' (2018) starts where the previous anime ''Grappler Baki'' left off and it jumps straight to the point. Death penalty prisoners, who are all beasts in their own respective way, escape in impossible manners and are on the hunt for every strong person so they can eventually, maybe, be defeated, which is something they still haven't felt being all-powerful as they think they are.
    • Baki and the crew decide to contest them and meet them head-on in series of skirmishes filled with martial arts and weapons because these prisoners aren't very prideful and they'll do anything to win. I would describe the show as if Mortal Kombat had an anime set in the modern age. Brutal fights, bizarre characters, and events, and all-around shlock. The animation is not that good but it really doesn't have to be. The art is pretty good but the sudden shifts between 2d and 3d are kind of jarring. The soundtrack is fine and though not better than the previous show it has the same feel, the opening songs are great, especially the second one. One more thing that was off is the way villains go from terrifying to not in the same league as our heroes, getting beat up by everyone and toyed around.
    • The key factor of entertainment in Baki is its ever-growing passion and sporty sense in which it is portrayed. It knows what it is and fully embraces that. Perfect guilty pleasure material for gym-goers and martial arts nerds, *cough* I mean, for manly men!

Dowright bizzare, but I don't hate it

A very bizzare experiment of an anime. The plot is nonsensical, fights are incredibly over the top gory, violent and packed with cliche dialog and exposition. Plot ? What plot? Honestly I completely lost track of what is even going on there, who is fighting who and why ? At times it feels like Baki him self is not even the main character but a B-plot. Also the animation quality is all over the place , from very flash-like "handdrawn" scenes to just PS2 era cell shaded 3D, absolutely no consistency. Despite of all of that, it is really out to lunch crazy and it's almost impossible to predict what it's going to happen next, and it's somewhat entertaining in that sense, like watching a live car pile up on the freeway after a snowstorm and cold made the roads all icy. It's good to kill some time in a lockdown.
