Ichigo Ichie: Camel Live in Japan

10/10

Amazing.

Fantastic show with almost the best af Camel's repertoire. The band plays in a beautiful large hall and has a large stage at its disposal. The camera work is very strong. Many shots are from the balcony and that works out very well. There are not many shots exchanged, which is good for the rest. I often find the image a bit grainy. A release on Blu-ray would have been great in that respect. The sound, on the other hand, is of great class. A truly missed opportunity that the concert was not released on CD.

The core of the performance contains a selection of songs from "The Snow Goose" and those performances are all beautiful. It remains fascinating to watch and listen to Andy Latimer's guitar work and how much he immerses himself in his playing. Denis Clement, exceptionally not in shorts for once, swings like crazy and Colin Bass is solid as ever. The latter also has a very good voice. Only in Drafted he has trouble with the high notes. My only criticism is Andy Latimer's vocals, which I actually think are the weakest link and the somewhat messy performance of Mother Road. Furthermore, it is enjoyment with capital letters.
