There are at least 2 movies that this borrows from. "Solo" and "Short Circuit" which came before it - "#5 is alive". a military robot that gets struck by lightning and becomes self aware. Then hunting it down and everyone that saw it.
Solo borrowed from this and updated it. The earlier movies used puppets and props, as well as having a live actor (Peebles) playing an android. The BR4 uses CGI and motion capture to bring it to life.
