The prison scenes were recorded in the old fort of San Cristobal (near Pamplona, Spain), a place used as a political prison of another dictatorship: Francoism in Spain. Some prisoners escaped from this prison, an event that is seen in the documentary "Ezkaba, la gran fuga de las cárceles franquistas" (2006)
After he become president of Uruguay, Jose Mujica (played by Antonio De La Torre) earned the nickname of "the poorest president in the world" , choosing to live on a farm outside Montevideo and not in the presidential residence, and donating 90% of his salary to charity. Mujica was so humbled that his "official" presidential car was a blue 1987 Volkswagen Beetle.
