Jackson wrote the role of John specifically for Gerard Boeke.
The main scene of the movie is a six page dialogue heavy scene between John and Lucy on the roof top of the building. This scene contains the main emotional thrust of the story and, to echo this, Jackson wanted to see the sun setting in the back of shot in the the final moment of the scene as John walks back into the building. This restricted them to just under an hour and a half to shoot the entire scene with converge to match lighting throughout as the sun was slowly setting. Jackson and the cast rehearsed this scene for two weeks. He then blocked it meticulously with Lockeridge before filming. The effect is a seamless transition of setting sun beneath this explosive moment in the story, culminating with the sun setting in the final image as john limps, broken and exhausted, back into the building.
