- Title Card: The legend of the scarecrow goes back generations. It is said the Scarecrow was once a man who was thought to be stealing from the locals in the 1800s. He was left out in the cold winter, strung up to a cross in the cornfield. The locals watched on while crows pecked him to death, watching his soul die in the fields. Some say the soul of the Scarecrow still haunts those fields. Some say every 20 years he rises once more, seeking revenge on those who walk the land. Mistaking them for those who did him wrong.
- Karen: So, being 2 decades on, you finally know the truth about your parents.
- Karen: Yeah, I mean like, I know it wasn't a scarecrow.
- [laughs]
- Karen: I don't even know how I thought that even just for a minute.
- June: It's not uncommon for people that experience traumatic things to go into their psyche and create a fantasy to be able to cope with it. You were 6 years old, you watched your parents being brutally slain in your own home, you know that's quite awful to have to deal with, so putting a mask on the killer is a very normal thing that people do in those circumstances, I just think that it's time for you to move forward now, which I think you have.
- Karen: Yeah, I mean I just want to know who it was. You know, like I can't get it out of my head.
- June: Do you still have access to the family home?
- Karen: Yep.
- June: And who lives there now?
- Karen: My brother, Carl. I don't think he ever moved on.
- June: I think maybe you should go back there. How do you feel about that?
- Karen: [shakes head] Mmmm, no, I couldn't.
- June: If you're over this trauma, and I thought that we had dealt with it...
- Karen: We have dealt with it.
- June: See, you just said 'we'. It's not 'we', June, this is your journey, only you are responsible and can take action into your recovery, I can only take you so far, but it's down to you.
- Karen: You're right, so what do you suggest?
- June: I think you should call your brother.
- June: I wanted to let you know that I'm coming to see you tomorrow.
- Carl: No, you're not to come here.
- June: Carl, come on, it's been 20 years, I want to be with you tomorrow, I want to remember the good things, not just how it ended.
- Carl: It's been 20 years, and he *will* rise again.
- June: Carl, I thought we were past this, it wasn't a scarecrow, probably a burglary gone wrong, I mean we really have to face the truth, we're not kids anymore.
- Carl: I am, and it's about time that you did too.
- [bell dings, turns and looks]
- Carl: I knew you'd come back.
- June: Carl? Carl, I'm coming tomorrow, I don't care what you say. I want to be with you, I want to hang out with you.
- Carl: No, it's not safe for you here, I've got to go.
- [hangs up]
- Karen: Right, June, come with me, I know exactly what I'm going to do, I'm going to fix you.
- June: Karen...
- Karen: You need to face your fears.
- [gestures to the scarecrow hanging in the field]
- Karen: Take a look at this, what do you see?
- June: Karen, I don't want to.
- Karen: What do you see?
- [June shrugs]
- Karen: A scarecrow, yeah? A scarecrow, nothing alive about it,
- [tugs on the rags]
- Karen: there's nothing there that's gonna hurt you, it's not dangerous, it's just a big lump of straw, that's it! Do you get it now? Do you get it in your head?
- June: I don't like this at all, Karen.
- Karen: Alright, I tell you what we're gonna do, we're gonna unmask your killer, let's unmask him and see what he looks like.
- Nancy: [comes up] Hey you guys, what' you doing out so late?
- Karen: I'm trying to show June that the scarecrow, this fear that she has for him is totally unfounded, it's just something, a figment of her imagination. It's got to stop, there is *nothing* scary about this, nothing, it's not real. I know what we'll do, we'll unmask the killer, are you ready? Let's see what is behind the mask once and for all, on the count of three. One... two... three!
- [rips off burlap mask and reveals Chanel strung up on the cross, all three gasp and scream in horror]
- Karen: Oh my God! It's that girl!
- [a bell rings, they look around]
- Karen: Who's there? Show yourself! Somebody's out here messing with us. Okay, I'll tell you what we're gonna do, we're gonna get back in the house.
- June: Let's make a run for it.
- Nancy: Right, on the count of three. One... two... three!
- [a scythe slashes her arm, revealing the scarecrow]
