The story is completely autobiographical and came to life as a way for Anna Alfieri to cope with her life circumstances.
Quoting Anna on her film: "At the time it felt like the alternative to making this film was to take my own life. So, there we go, I guess it could not get more borderline than that. When the line between your life and your film is so subtle, you quite easily end up insane. Whereas during early production stages it felt like my film was mirroring my reality, during post-production it started feeling more like my reality was mirroring my film, which is really f***ed up! But then again, I guess it had to be expected given the operation made in order to bring this film to life and the fact there were never any limits to how far I was willing to go or how much I was willing to sacrifice. Using my friend's words, Sam (also featured in the film), the result should be brilliant and pathetic!"
Anna was initially writing the film as she was going through her real life events, trying to shoot at the same time.
However, she had to put production on hold for 2 months, after her first cinematographer called it quits out of lack of belief in the film. Finding the perfect director of photography took Anna 2 months, more than a 100 applicants and about a dozen test shoots with her co-lead actress (Agathe Ferre') who had, by that time, been confirmed for the part.
All the scenes were loosely improvised around a 12 pages skeleton that kept being revised over the shooting period. The overall amount of improvised footage was around 40 hours, with almost every scene shot in one take, with the camera constantly following the action.
All the flashbacks in the film were shot in chronological order to allow the actresses to reconstruct a love story as organically as possible.
