Director Ricky Borba was asked to direct and given the script in May of 2017. Two months later his own mother was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and died seven weeks later. But during her treatment, Ricky Borba rewrote the character of Georgia Petros to reflect what his mother said and did during her battle with cancer. Almost all of Georgia's dialogue in the film ended up being what Ricky Borba's mother told him in real life.

Robert Lasardo's original monologue in his jail cell ended up being unusable due to technical issues with the camera. The following day, Lasardo re-filmed the monologue, which both he and director Ricky Borba agreed was even better than the original one filmed the day before.
Filmed over 17 days in October and December of 2018.
