An exciting new voice has officially entered the action sphere.
Actor Dev Patel had previously dabbled in the action genre by leading the cast of 2018's "The Wedding Guest." But with "Monkey Man," his feature directorial debut which he also co-wrote, produced, and stars in, Patel took a deep dive into the type of visceral, hard-hitting filmmaking that has redefined the genre over the past decade or so. The experience of getting the movie across the finish line wasn't easy -- he suffered a broken bone during filming -- but along the way, he managed to achieve some transcendent moments of action cinema glory that will forever endear him to fans of martial arts films.

The bridge between Indian and American action cinema has unfortunately yet to be built. There are throughlines between the two industries, that's for sure; recently, Siddharth Anand's “Fighter” borrowed the luscious aesthetics and jingoistic tone of the “Top Gun” franchise, and the work of Lokesh Kanagaraj wouldn't quite be the way it is without his trusty, robust list of North American favorites. But there has yet to be a film that solidly unifies the nations with an equal balance of what makes each industries' take on high-octane thrills so heady. That is perhaps until now, with Dev Patel's American-produced, Mumbai-set one-man-army action-extravaganza “Monkey Man” that pounds its chest onto screens around the world with unparalleled levels of energy, swagger and savagery.

Since we’re now into the slow slide from Easter/Spring Break into the Summer cinema season, how about an Mma-style action thriller full of fights and daring escapes? Oh, you say we just had that in the remake of Road House just a couple of weeks ago. Well that flick, despite the director’s protests to the press, bypassed the multiplex and went right to a streaming service. And this new release almost went the same route until an Oscar-winning filmmaker saw it, bought it, and helped prep it for a wide theatrical debut. Oh, and speaking of debuts, this is the first feature directed by the star of a Best Picture Oscar winner over a dozen years ago. Yes, he was the lead in that, and he’s in the lead here as the mysterious avenger who is known as the Monkey Man. And no, he’s not another comics-based hero.

"It's all about image - the super yacht, the models. It's all part of a brand." Film4 & Sony have debuted the first official trailer for an indie film titled Greed, the latest feature from filmmaker Michael Winterbottom. This cautionary-tale is a satire about capitalism and greed, focusing on a wealthy fashion designer / clothing retailer. This initially premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and it also stopped by the London Film Festival this fall. Steve Coogan plays a billionaire named Sir Richard McCreadie, who's planning an elaborate party on the Greek island of Mykonos in hopes of "repairing his image" after the world turns on him. Also starring Isla Fisher, Asa Butterfield, Sophie Cookson, Stephen Fry, Shirley Henderson, Jamie Blackley, Sarah Solemani, & David Mitchell. Reviews from Tiff were mixed, but I still really want to see this. I love these kind of brutally honest satires. Here's the first ...

The fourth film in “The Trip” franchise, “The Trip to Greece,” starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon and directed by Michael Winterbottom, has been acquired for U.S. distribution by IFC Films, IFC announced Friday. The distributor is planning a summer 2020 release.
This comes as no surprise, as IFC Films has released all three of the previous movies in “The Trip” franchise, including the original from 2010, “The Trip to Italy” in 2014 and “The Trip to Spain” in 2017.
Coogan and Brydon — who play themselves in the scripted travel-themed film series — reunite yet again for more meals with expensive, gourmet dishes along with more conversation and more impressions of British luminaries.
Here’s the official synopsis:

The Wedding Guest is directed by Michael Winterbottom and stars Dev Patel as Jay, a mysterious man who is travelling to Pakistan from Britain to attend a wedding with ulterior motives. Winterbottom’s film, while a decent effort is a largely missed opportunity to discuss a range of divisive and compelling themes on culture/social gender politics. Instead, the audience is treated to a simplistic thriller that is best described as a quick fix of sorts.
The Wedding Guest is mostly flat. It is a film that begins in an intriguing mysticism and soon turns into a conventional passionate love story that does not feel earned nor granted for this specific plot. Where The Wedding Guest flourishes is when it plays its hand at mysticism. The film has tension...

It might not be considered Asian by its production country (UK), the origins of its writer/director Michael Winterbottom, or, frankly, by its style that fits the bill of a British globe-trotting thriller, but “The Wedding Guest”, showing at Art Film Fest in Košice, deserves its Asian Movie Pulse review. At least the filming locations were in India and Pakistan, the cast consists of Indian-British star actors and the theme is very much rooted in the culture Indian sub-continent, fresh, approached from an interesting angle and wrapped up in a smooth genre-esque ride.

In the opening montage, we get to see a still nameless, solitary man (Dev Patel), preparing himself for the trip. The nature of his mission is not clear yet, but is certainly clandestine, as he is carrying multiple passports. Once in Pakistan, he travels across the country,...

I think it’s safe to say that Dev Patel is an underrated leading man in Hollywood, that is, when he’s actually given a leading role. Those are few and far between for him. Still, when he’s allowed the chance, he shows his chops, even if the material is not up to snuff. Such is the case here with The Wedding Guest, a low-key thriller that begins with potential but slowly squanders it away. The key word here is slowly too, as everything about this film is slow. For a short movie, it feels twice as long. Throw in a terrible ending and this all adds up to a disappointment, Patel excluded. The film is a thriller that begins as a mystery. We begin by following a mysterious British Muslim man named Jay (Patel) on his journey from Britain to Pakistan. Soon, we realize that he’s been...

The internet will correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure “The Wedding Guest” is the first time Dev Patel has handled a firearm in one of his movies. Five minutes into Michael Winterbottom’s Pakistan-set thriller, the actor walks into a shop, asks to try out a gun, and proceeds to inspect a semiautomatic pistol before settling on another. At this point, we don’t know the character’s name — and besides, we’ve seen him slip passports with four aliases into his suitcase — but Winterbottom is already actively manipulating stereotypes.
“The Wedding Guest” turns out to be the story of a professional, played by Patel but of the sort usually embodied by white men with square jaws and power-drill stares, who is contracted to kidnap a woman (Radhika Apte) on the eve of her arranged marriage and deliver her to the man she loves. But Winterbottom,...

Just shy of the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, Neon’s Apollo 11 is taking one giant leap into well over a hundred Imax theaters this weekend. The feature film, by Todd Douglas Miller and compiled from extensive very rarely seen large format footage of the mission, is one of the first big 2019 Sundance Film Festival debuts to hit theaters. The title joins a decent number of new Specialty releases Friday, which follows an Oscar-weekend lull. The Crown and Doctor Who’s Matt Smith stars in Mapplethorpe, Ondi Timoner’s biopic being launched by Samuel Goldwyn Films. IFC Films is opening Michael Winterbottom’s latest, The Wedding Guest. The thriller stars Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel and is getting a traditional roll out beginning in New York this weekend. And Music Box Films is rolling out Christian Petzold’s French and German drama Transit also in New York Friday...

After last weekend saw a franchise record debut for Universal and DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, this weekend serves as something of the calm before the storm that will be Captain Marvel, which the industry is counting on to give the 2019 box office the jolt it sorely needs. As for this weekend, Hidden World will remain at #1, hoping to hold on more like the first film in the franchise than the second, while Lionsgate debuts Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral and Focus will release the thriller Greta. Additionally, this past weekend's Oscar winners find themselves expanding back into theaters, led by Best Picture winner Green Book. Following a better-than-expected debut last weekend, Universal's release of DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon 3 will remain the top film at the weekend box office this weekend, the question is whether it delivers a performance more like the first film,...

Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong didn’t quite engage with moviegoers last fall, with Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” limping to about $45 million at the box office and failing to land an Oscar Best Picture nomination.
But what about Neil Armstrong as Neil Armstrong?
That’s what you get with “Apollo 11,” which uses actual footage from the Nasa mission that first landed a man on the moon. The film is one of the opening-night documentaries at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, offering a less enveloping but fully captivating look at the mission whose 50th anniversary will arrive in July of this year.

A thriller without thrills is merely a drama, and “The Wedding Guest” is a dull drama at that. The story of a kidnapping gone slightly wrong, Michael Winterbottom’s latest film is a low, slow boil with no real surprises and an ending that will elicit a “That’s it?”
Dev Patel stars as Jay, the kidnapper in question. He’s a hired hand and not, in fact, the guest at a wedding. We meet him as he’s packing; along with the standard clothes and shoes, he puts in his suitcase a slew of passports. Jay looks stricken as he moves through airport security and onto a plane. He’s traveling from Britain to Pakistan, where he’ll rent two cars and buy two guns.
After a minimum of surveillance of a guarded home, Jay strikes in the middle of the night, abducting a woman named Samira. He puts...

If you’re worried that any part of director Gaspar Noé’s reference-laden dance freak-out “Climax” might go over your head, well, have no fear. For all of its other considerable pleasures, this loose-limbed hallucination comes with its own course syllabus.
After his usual wink where he runs the end credits at the very top, Noé opens the film on a shot of a TV flanked by worn out paperbacks on one side and ratty VHS tapes on the other. He keeps that shot a long time, introducing each and every professional dancer that makes up the cast, as well as hinting at their eventual conflicts.
Allow your eyes to wander, note the copies of Argento’s “Suspiria,” Zulawski’s “Possession” and Pasolini’s “Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom” and you’ll have yourself a most efficient user’s manual for everything that’s about to come.

The major thing that “Mapplethorpe” has in its favor is that the film is afraid of neither the life nor the work of the notorious photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
Documentary director Ondi Timoner (“We Live in Public”), making her narrative debut, has ensured that this movie acknowledges the many hard edges and unattractive qualities of this man while also celebrating and not looking away from his most explicit and scariest photographs, many of which rather surprisingly appear on screen.
Most mainstream films are afraid of showing the male penis, or anything having to do with sadomasochism, but Timoner’s attitude here seems to be, “Bring it on!” Timoner’s gutsiness is shared (and then some) by her star Matt Smith, a British actor who very convincingly played another gay male icon, writer Christopher Isherwood, in a TV movie of Isherwood’s memoir “Christopher and His Kind” in 2011.

As a spare and sexy thriller, Michael Winterbottom’s “The Wedding Guest” is far too undercooked; there’s little flavor, and even less to chew on. As an audition for its star to be the next James Bond, however, this aimless Dev Patel vehicle is virtually perfect. Sure, there could stand to be a bit more shooting, but anyone with high cheekbones can look good holding a gun. Patel, who can play lost and worldly at the same time, brings a lot more to the table: Cold swagger. Taciturn mystery. A vulnerable side that he’s dying to show you. A scruffy beard that he wears like a disguise that’s designed to attract every kind of attention. If anything, Patel would have to soften up to play cinema’s most iconic spy.

Sunday at the Glasgow Film Festival was busy right from the start, with film fans – some of whom admitted to never having seen it before – packing into the free screening of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid. Argentinean family drama The Quietude proved heady stuff that early in the day but for people looking for something there kids could enjoy, a special child-focused screening of the original Ghostbusters amply delivered. It was an event that would be repeated with less drawing and sliming, more swearing and cocktails to entertain adults in the evening. Of course, everyone loved the Staypuft marshmallows.

Like the protagonist of his latest film, The Wedding Guest, Michael Winterbottom is a wanderer–cinematically, that is. There are few filmmakers in modern cinema who hop between genres quite like the British helmer. Consider just a few entries from his gobsmackingly lengthy filmography: a Thomas Hardy adaptation (Jude); a war film set in 1990s Sarajevo (Welcome to Sarajevo); a second Hardy adaptation shot in snowy Canada (The Claim); a future-set love story (Code 46); a sexually-explicit anthology centered around songs from the likes of Primal Scream and Franz Ferdinand (9 Songs); a documentary based on the work of Naomi Klein and another featuring Russell Brand (The Shock Doctrine and The Emperor’s New Clothes); and a tremendously violent and unsettling Jim Thompson adaptation (The Killer Inside Me).

"Do you know who sent me?" IFC Films has debuted the first official trailer for The Wedding Guest, the latest film from director Michael Winterbottom. This adventure thriller follows a mysterious British Muslim man, played by Dev Patel, on his journey across Pakistan and India. He's heading to Pakistan to attend a wedding – armed with duct tape, a shotgun, and a plan to kidnap the bride-to-be. This looks like a dark, suspenseful film with some intriguing twists – maybe – once it gets going. The film's cast includes Radhika Apte, Jim Sarbh, Harish Khannaa, Nish Nathwani, Meherbaan Singh, and Sidhu Manpreet. This all seems a bit odd from the description and setup, but obviously there's more to this than it seems at first glance. Check it out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Winterbottom's The Wedding Guest, from YouTube: Jay (Dev Patel) is a ...

As a wedding guest, your job is simple. You show up on time, you dress appropriately, and you wish the folks getting hitched the best of luck. One thing you don’t do is break into their home in the middle of the night and kidnap the bride at gunpoint. Alas, that’s exactly what happens in the upcoming thriller “The Wedding Guest.”
As seen in the first trailer, Dev Patel plays the titular guest named Jay.

Armie Hammer and Dev Patel join forces in the official trailer for “Hotel Mumbai,” the historical drama about the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in India. The movie, directed and co-written by Anthony Maras, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.
The official synopsis from Bleecker Street reads: “‘Hotel Mumbai’ vividly recounts the 2008 siege of the famed Taj Hotel by a group of terrorists in Mumbai, India. Among the dedicated hotel staff is the renowned chef Hemant Oberoi (Anupam Kher) and a waiter (Patel) who choose to risk their lives to protect their guests. As the world watches on, a desperate couple (Hammer and Nazanin Boniadi) is forced to make unthinkable sacrifices to protect their newborn child.”
In his positive review out of Tiff, IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called “Hotel Mumbai” a “lucid, humane, and almost unwatchably harrowing drama” and a “powerful debut film” for Maras.

Apte, who stopped by the TheWrap studio with Patel during the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, said she feels fortunate times are changing, saying the film’s story could take place anywhere with anyone, regardless of race, nationality or gender.
“I know this film is particular to the place, but in my head it could take place anywhere,” Apte said. “I do feel, Dev, that you’ve broken a lot of stereotypes. You are doing films where you don’t necessarily need to be a brown skin boy, you can play anybody and I think that’s so incredible and so required; desperately. I feel so fortunate to be a part of the change.”

Dev Patel On Shooting Michael Winterbottom’s India-Set Thriller ‘The Wedding Guest’ – Toronto Studio
A surprise gem in the Tiff selection was Michael Winterbottom’s under-the-radar thriller The Wedding Guest, in which Hotel Mumbai star Dev Patel plays a mysterious man who travels to Pakistan, where a woman named Samira (Radhika Apte) is about to be married. More than that, the director and his cast refused to say when they came to the Deadline studio.
Instead, Patel enthused about working with Winterbottom, who films with a documentarian’s eye for detail. “The shoot was a real process of submission,” said Patel. “Michael plops us in these environments, and you’re kind of interacting with the [location] in its raw state. It is very guerrilla. And the real beauty of it was that me and Radhika didn’t really know each other beforehand, and [we were] figuring each other out as human beings and as characters while the camera was documenting our journey across the country. You kind of,...
