The decision made by the Senate is, until this day, deemed absurd by many scholars - the constitutional mandate was stripped, but the president didn't receive any of the punishments prescribed in the law for the crimes she was accused of. Former president Dilma Rousseff was never found guilty of any misconduct in legal proceedings. Her vice-president, however, was arrested for corruption and is still facing criminal charges. Many of the politicians involved in the impeachment are facing criminal charges today. While the accusations against former president Dilma Rousseff are still controversial and seen as a smokescreen for a coup, the current President, Jair Bolsonaro, faces over 200 impeachment accusations, based on constitutional crimes against the nation. His most recent crime is still being investigated by the Senate, and relates to the inflation of COVID vaccine prices. The leader of the Senate, a long time friend of Bolsonaro, refuses to initiate impeachment proceedings.
