Even the most fantastical stories are often based in a grippingly realistic emotional reality. That’s certainly the case for director Nicholas McCarthy’s new movie, ‘The Prodigy,’ which was written by Jeff Buhler. The drama marks the helmer’s third entry in the horror genre, following his celebrated feature directorial debut, 2012’s ‘The Pact,’ as well as […]

Exclusive: Alistair Legrand (Clinical) has been set to direct supernatural horror thriller Mile 81, based on the 2011 novella by Stephen King. Producer is Ross M. Dinerstein, who recently produced Netflix’s King adaptation 1922 and the streaming service’s John Grisham inspired docuseries The Innocent Man. Paradigm is handling sales, and introducing the project at the European Film Market in Berlin.
Script comes from Legrand and Luke Harvis (The Diabolical). Production is planned for fall 2019 with casting discussions underway.
Set around a remote, boarded-up rest stop, the film will follow 12-year-old Pete, his brother, and a group of strangers who must fight to survive as they’re hunted by a mysterious force.
Legrand previously directed horror pics The Diabolical with Ali Larter and Netflix’s Clinical starring Vinessa Shaw. Both titles were written by Legrand and Harvis, and produced by Dinerstein, whose other credits include The Pact, The Divide and The Nightmare.

Exhibitors can rest easy knowing that moviegoing will return to some sort of normalcy this weekend after that dreadful $73.4M Super Bowl period; the lowest 3-day since the final weekend of August 2017. After the Big Game and Universal/Bvi/Blumhouse’s Glass scared away a number of major studios from competing, the marquee space is about to fill up very fast.
Warner Bros.’ The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, one of four wide entries this weekend, will easily notch No. 1 with a $50M-$55M start at 4,276 locations. However, by Wednesday, another three titles will hit with Universal/Blumhouse’s Happy Death Day 2U, Fox/Lighstorm’s Alita: Battle Angel, and New Line/Bron Studios’ Rebel Wilson comedy Isn’t It Romantic. It’s a complete flush of multiplexes’ inventory and the box office chart, one which is long overdue. Since the start of the year, exhibitors have only had dribbles of new product.

“Mommy… will you always love me, no matter what I do?”
Orion Pictures has released a creepy new trailer for their upcoming horror thriller The Prodigy. It looks like it could end up being a decent horror flick!
The movie stars Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black), and she takes on the role of Sarah, a mother whose gifted young son Miles is possessed by some kind of evil supernatural force. As you might expect, that leads to some disturbing behavior.
“Fearing for her family’s safety, Sarah must grapple with her maternal instinct to love and protect Miles in favor of investigating what – or who – is causing his dark turn. She is forced to look for answers in the past, taking the audience on a wild ride; one where the line between perception and reality remains blurry.”

In 2017, Jackson Robert Scott made a splash in the horror genre with his role as Georgie in the new It movie (providing plenty of nightmare fuel in the iconic sewer drain scene opposite Pennywise). In 2019, Scott returns to the big screen in The Prodigy, this time playing Miles, a young boy possessed by an entity with malevolent intentions, as evidenced by the film's new trailer ahead of its release this February from Orion Pictures.

October 2018 is still running at a record pace. As of October 24, the month was pacing +49% higher than last year, not to mention +7.8% ahead of 2014, the largest October on record, though that's about to change by the end of this weekend. That said, it won't be the weekend's new releases doing the heavy lifting, but the weekend's holdovers, starting with last weekend's chart-topping horror hit Halloween. The weekend's new wide releases will mostly debut in the low-to-mid single digit millions with Lionsgate's Hunter Killer expected to top the week's crop of new releases. Looking to repeat at #1 is Universal's release of Blumhouse and Miramax's Halloween, which delivered a smashing $76.2 million opening last weekend, the second largest October opening ever. When it comes to its sophomore session we looked at other R-rated horror hits such as It, The Conjuring, Paranormal Activity 3 and The Nun, which dropped, on average, -57.45% in their second weekends.
