Warner Bros Discovery left Spain out of its clampdown on European original programs for HBO Max, and has now doubled down on the country by ordering a soccer comedy there.
Production is underway in Madrid on Playing Dirty (Monos con Pistola) The seven-part series comes from Jorge Valdano Sáenz and Pablo Tébar and is based on an idea from Carolina Bang and Álex de la Iglesia, whose drama 30 Coins is one HBO Max Europe’s most high-profile originals. The series is produced by Bang and de la Iglesia’s Pokeepsie Films, which is part of Banijay Iberia.
Playing Dirty follows the life of soccer agent Alberto Martín Ruiz, otherwise known as ‘Beto,’ as he leaves the comfortable life of working at a large soccer agency to go it alone and start his own venture. Navigating between his daily delirious struggle with soccer players and his stressful family life, his only solace is his girlfriend,...

The Super Bowl Halftime show is the biggest stage on Earth for a musician, and the Weeknd made the most of his 12-odd minutes on Sunday night, delivering a tightly choreographed, technologically dazzling set that not only lived up to some of the most iconic performances of the past, it also touched on songs and images from all across his decade-long career — and he did it under strict pandemic restrictions, before a stadium that was approximately one-tenth full.
In the week leading up to the game, the Weeknd had said that his main stage would be located in the stands — although he would utilize the field as well — and that it would continue the cryptic bad-night-in-Las-Vegas storyline that has accompanied all of the videos and TV performances around his blockbuster latest album, “After Hours.” All of those things proved true (although the connection to the storyline was even more cryptic...

Ava DuVernay is reuniting with “When They See Us” composer Kris Bowers for the documentary short “A Concerto Is a Conversation.”
DuVernay will executive produce the film, which was co-directed and produced by Bowers and Ben Proudfoot. “A Concerto Is a Conversation” was selected to premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, which has shifted to a virtual model amid the ongoing pandemic. The 13-minute short, positioned to be an early Oscar contender, will begin screening at the fest on Jan. 28.
The film is currently streaming exclusively at NYTimes.com, as part of the New York Times Op-Docs series. It centers on the relationship between Bowers and his 91-year-old grandfather Horace Bowers Sr., as the virtuoso jazz pianist traces his family’s lineage. A new year has arrived but Amazon Prime is looking to the past.
That’s not a bad thing mind you, as for its list of new releases in January 2021, Amazon is bringing back some classic movies and TV shows for its host of subscribers. We’ll get to the Amazon originals in a moment but for now, feast your eyes on January’s impressive library additions for the streamer.
Jan. 1 marks the arrival of all eight seasons of Dexter…roughly four and a half of which are great! Dexter will be receiving its own Michael C. Hall-approved revival later this year and thanks to Amazon you can catch up with the first run again. Speaking of show’s with disappointing conclusions, all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother will come to Amazon on Jan. 19. It’s been some time since I saw a thriller like Alone – one that was actually as thrilling as it promised. Alone delivers on every single level. It is tense, oh my god, it’s tense. It has you on the edge of your seat from the moment events begin. I was hugely impressed by director John Hyams work here, showing a level of mastery and restrainant in never going for the cheap jump and always letting the tension marinate making this a psychological juggernaut. The performances are outrageously good with an eerie menacing script at times. The cinematography is simply divine, so much so that there are shots in this movie that actually took me by surprise!

A version of this story first appeared in the Documentaries issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
Garrett Bradley’s “Time” (streaming on Amazon) is a moving chronicle of Fox Richardson, a New Orleans woman who for 21 years fought for the rights of her imprisoned husband Robert. The film is impressionistic, often lingering on silent moments or the quietude of nature. Yet it’s made with a keen cinematic eye, presented in desaturated black-and-white, as we move between Fox’s contemporary struggle and archival footage of her life over the past two decades.
Bradley’s credits include features, television (OWN’s “Queen Sugar”), and documentary shorts (The New York Times OpDoc “Alone”). “Time,” which is 81 minutes long but contains the fullness of a complex human life, has already won the 34-year-old filmmaker awards from the Sundance Film Festival, the New York Film Critics Circle, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

“After We Collided” is the big winner this week. It is #1 at both Apple TV and Google Play, and #2 at FandangoNow (where its $6.99 price on the revenue-based chart put it at a disadvantage). Its Friday debut precluded Spectrum.
This is the sequel to 2019 college romance “After,” which grossed $12 million domestic and $57 million overseas. “After We Collided” also had a theatrical release this weekend, but earned only $420,000 at theaters willing to play day and date. This opened weeks ago in international theaters (including Canada), where it’s earned over $46 million. It’s a sign of how foreign results are dwarfing domestic ones (albeit with minimal competition).
Briarcliff opted to go at a non-premium VOD price and this clicked right away. “After” cost $14 million; figure this is more. It’s recouped a nice share of its cost overseas, and now can collect 70 percent of its domestic VOD from what appears to be a strong response.

Barcelona-based studio Filmax has acquired world sales rights to “Lemon and Poppy Seed Cake,” an uplifting second chance in life drama from Spain’s Benito Zambrano, writer-director of critically admired features that have scored festival and Goya awards and broken out to sales abroad.
Also handling local distribution in Spain, Filmax will bring “Lemon and Poppy Seed Cake” onto the market at November’s online American Film Market.
Produced by Filmax and Luxembourg’s Deal Productions, whose credits include Berlin Festival’s 2019 Panorama opener “Flatland” and 2017’s “High Fantasy,” which screened at Berlin, Toronto and Rotterdam, “Lemon and Poppy Seed Cake” turns on two sisters, Anna and Marina.
Separated as teens, they re-meet to sell a bakery in Majorca that they’ve inherited from a mysterious benefactor. Neither are happy in life. Anna is locked in a loveless marriage; Marina travels the world as an Ngo doctor, a lonely existence.

After selling off a half-dozen titles to Amazon and Netflix, “Love and Monsters” is one of the few Paramount Pictures titles to receive a 2020 theatrical release. It’s not much of a release — 387 theaters this weekend, for $255,000 — but its PVOD performance (at $19.99) may suggest why Paramount chose to hold on to it.
Scheduled pre-covid for theatrical release April 17, “Love and Monsters” (original title: “Monster Problems”) is no. 1 at both Apple TV and FandangoNow. Budgeted at $30 million, this adventure comedy led by”Maze Runner” and “Teen Wolf” star Dylan O’Brien, is not unlike “Zombieland” in its use of a young hero fighting off monsters in a dystopian society.
It’s the only new PVOD title this week, so it’s unsurprising to see its high placement at FandangoNow, which ranks its charts by revenue. Still, it beat out “Mulan,” which costs $29.99. More impressive: It leads at Apple TV, which ranks by number of transactions,...

As you can see in the promo, Russell is once again in Santa’s red coat, and he’s also joined by real-life partner Goldie Hawn as Mrs. Claus, following her smaller role in the first film. Thinking of making a movie and titling it Alone? You wouldn’t be alone.
During this year alone — a stretch of time when many found themselves at home alone due to the Covid-19 pandemic — there have been three thrillers that share the same moniker: Vladislav Khesin’s Alone starring Elizabeth Arends from Broken Cage Studio; John Hyams’ Alone starring Jules Wilcox and Marc Menchaca from Magnolia Pictures genre arm Magnet Releasing; and Johnny Martin’s Alone starring Donald Sutherland and Tyler Pose for Grindstone Entertainment. “Time” is a movie about the aftermath of a crime that tells you very little about the crime, or the trial that followed, or the legal arguments that tried to get a man out of jail for decades. Instead, it focuses on one thing: the people who are affected, inside but mostly outside the jail.
You could call it a film about crime and justice, but it’s really a film about humanity.
In recent years, we’ve seen a string of disquieting films about miscarriages of justice and about the mass incarceration of young Black men, among them “13,” “The Central Park Five,” “Crime + Punishment” and “Copwatch.” But Garrett Bradley’s “Time” never comes across like an issue film, because it speaks to the issues by showing the people; it’s closer to a doc like “Hale County This Morning, This Evening” in that it’s an artful...

There’s a pair of shattering moments at the heart of the 2016 short documentary Alone, directed by Garrett Bradley, that opens the door to the world the filmmaker complicates and expounds upon in her new, feature-length documentary Time. The first comes when the young woman at its center, Aloné Watts, reveals to her family that she plans to marry Desmond Watson, a man in prison. We have already seen her trying...

The last time Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken appeared together onscreen, they were playing a tragic game of Russian roulette in the classic 1978 film The Deer Hunter.
Reunited for the first time in 42 years in the family comedy The War with Grandpa, they play dodgeball…on trampolines. (Insert your own sigh here.)
Of course, the juvenile target audience for this effort, which makes the Home Alone films seem sophisticated, will have no awareness of the two actors’ storied careers. Or that Uma Thurman is an Oscar nominee herself. Or that Cheech Marin…well, it’s probably best they don’t ...

With “Mulan” arriving on more platforms October 6 and non-premium VOD titles like “The Witches” and Amazon’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” later this month, the home-viewing market was on pause with no new premium titles this weekend. That didn’t stop Jessica Chastain’s “Ava,” however: It had the best showing for a non-premium title in the six months we’ve covered weekly VOD performance.
The $6.99 female-assassin action film, which debuted September 25, placed #1 at the three transactional sites and second at FandangoNow, which lists by revenue. Other recent titles like “The Outpost,” “The Tax Collector,” and “The Silencing” have thrived for multiple weeks, but none topped the charts for two weeks.
Beating out “Ava” at FandangoNow, thanks to its $19.99 price point, is “Antebellum.” In its third week, it’s also #2 at Spectrum. It fell off Apple TV and Google Play, even with less competition among premium titles.

Though Alone wasn’t a high-profile release, it’s been well-received by critics, earning a 95% positive score on the Rotten Tomatoes site. A lot of that, star Jules Willcox believes, comes from the fact that Alone definitely puts a new spin on the thriller genre, especially when it comes to the resourcefulness of her lead character, [...]

Update – Survival thriller “Alone” is getting plenty of company at movie theaters and on digital platforms — amid otherwise tough times in the exhibition business.
“We’ve been able to emphasize that ‘Alone’ is a very elemental and primal story for audiences,” said Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles. “For audiences, the situation is very recognizable. It’s very well-directed.”
The Magnolia Pictures release is currently one of the few success stories in the battered sector, which has seen Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” underperform, and studios delay high-profile releases such as “No Time to Die” and “F9” until 2021.
“Alone” is directed by Jonathan Hyams from a screenplay by Mattias Olsson. The film stars Jules Willcox as a young woman who desperately tries to escape a homicidal stalker — portrayed by a relentlessly menacing Marc Menchaca — in the wilderness. Critics have been dazzled, giving “Alone” a stellar 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

As the coronavirus-forced lockdown continues, movie studios have realized releasing new titles directly for consumers to stream and rent at home may continue to be necessary. Upcoming releases on subscription platforms and VOD range from horror films for stay-at-home Halloween to family movies for the holiday season.
While a handful of high-profile films still plan to premiere in theaters, there is a wealth of content to choose from on home viewing platforms, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus or Apple Plus. Many more titles are available through virtual cinemas and on rental/purchase platforms such as iTunes.
October is particularly loaded with spooky new movies, including horror titles “Books of Blood” on Hulu, “Scare me” on Shudder and “A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting” on Netflix. Premiering Oct. 21, Netflix’s romantic drama “Rebecca” centers on a newlywed who is faced with the legacy of her husband’s late wife.

VOD is for more than low-budget action movies. Janelle Monae, Millie Bobby Brown, and Jessica Chastain rule this week, starring in three distinctive films available only to home audiences. “Enola Holmes” on Netflix, and “Ava” are new to VOD this week, while the premium-price “Antebellum” is riding high in its second weekend at $19.99.
“Ava,” released September 25, currently sits at #1 on both AppleTV and Google Play at a standard new-release price of $6.99. It was a troubled production: Matthew Newton wrote the film (originally titled “Eve”) and developed it with Chastain, who stars as an assassin in a secret organization. However, he stepped down as its director about a month before production began in September 2018 after facing public backlash to his past charges of domestic violence and assault. (Newton pled guilty.)
Tate Taylor, who previously directed Chastain in “The Help” and “Ma,” replaced Newton; after the film wrapped, it was retitled “Ava.

As we head into October, the amount of new content on streaming and VOD platforms doesn’t seem to be slowing down, Covid-19 or not. For this weekend, a number of new movies were added to the major providers, including Misbehaviour, Ava, Alone, and No Escape. What, then, can we expect from these new titles and where can you watch them?
Well, first up is the Keira Knightley-starring Misbehaviour, a British comedy-drama from Philippa Lowthorpe. Set during the 1970 Miss World competition, the film examines the context behind a feminist protest at the event, and the impact of the first black winner. As with many new releases this year, a cinematic outing was curtailed by the pandemic, and with a decent response from reviewers, it’s worth checking out as a rental on the Microsoft or iTunes stores.

Five months after its scuttled April theatrical date, “Antebellum” is showing strong initial response on multiple VOD platforms. The premium-priced horror/thriller (with similarities to Jordan Peele’s hit “Get Out”) scored as the first top studio PVOD release since “Bill & Ted Face the Music” three weeks ago. With about 75 percent of North American theaters now open, they would have benefited from this title.
As always, we don’t have actual revenue totals. For “Antebellum,” however, its opening-weekend status is clear: It found top ranking on charts that rate by total gross (it achieved this in three days on FandangoNow and Vudu) and high placement on two other charts that list by transaction volume. (It debuted too late to place at Spectrum).
Lionsgate retained 80 percent of the take on “Antebellum,” compared to perhaps 50-55 percent for a theatrical run. On that basis, it means that if 500,000 consumers rented it,...

Some of the most tantalizing entries in the thriller genre are those films that forgo extensive backstory and exposition, and instead build increasingly gripping tension between the protagonist and antagonist on screen. That’s certainly the case for the new drama, ‘Alone,’ which was directed and edited by action genre filmmaker and television helmer, John Hyams. […]

‘The Secrets We Keep’, ‘The Nest’, ‘The Way I See It’ And ‘Alone’ Bring Life To Specialty Box Office
The majority of the specialty box office has shifted to virtual debut, streaming and digital-only since theaters have shuttered due to the pandemic, but as physical theaters begin to open their doors, titles have returned to the big screen, slowly pumping life into the long-dormant specialty space.
