It’s the most wonderful time of the year, so in between present wrapping and chestnut roasting why not watch some anime? Despite Christmas having a markedly different cultural role in Japan compared to many Western countries there are a lot of shows that use it as a jumping off point. It’s a good opportunity for some heartwarming character moments, be they romance or friendship, and maybe a few antics involving presents or Santa costumes. Workplace comedies give audiences some of the most relatable laughs that mirror their everyday lives.

Warning: Contains Major Spoilers from Aggretsuko Season 5!The fifth season of the hit Netflix anime Aggretsuko has finally made a fan-favorite romance official. Aggretsuko is a series that has resonated with anime fans ever since its debut in 2018. The adorable red panda stuck in an accounting job has proven to be one of the most relatable anime characters as Aggretsuko's title character voices her frustrations and burnout through late-night death metal karaoke. Now, the series is coming to an end with goals to wrap up all loose ends. The biggest revelation though is how the series officially confirms Retsuko and Haida are a couple.

Aggretsuko season five has confirmed that between the fourth season finale and season premiere, Haida and Retsuko have finally gotten together. It's unknown how much time has passed, but based on Haida's current addiction to an online game, it can be assumed that it's only been about a month or two.

Netflix anime continues on the move, as the streamer announced the feature film Drifting Home for a 2022 premiere, and updated the casts, dates and teasers on several other projects.

The Tudum virtual fan event was presented and hosted by Netflix Anime V-Tuber N-ko, highlighted by the Drifting Home news, the next feature film project by Studio Colorido, the team behind 2020’s A Whisker Away.

A recent survey found that one in five of Americans heavily rely on streaming services to help them cope with the trials and tribulations posed by the coronavirus pandemic. Netflix should be well aware of this fact, too, as their subscriber base has grown tremendously while other businesses – particularly those in the entertainment industry – are currently languishing.

Of course, periods of growth often precede times of rapid decline, and Netflix’s success has not been without its own complications. As more and more regions in the United States are reinstating quarantine, people consume content at faster rates than ever before. And in order to keep their subscribers satisfied, Netflix has tried their best to provide new material.

By the power of Grayskull, Kevin Smith has taken a metaphorical Power Sword to help bring a new animated series based on the He-Man. The Jay and Silent Bob Reboot director surprised fans at Power-Con in Anaheim on Sunday to share the news of his new Netflix anime series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, which will be an original story based on the world of Mattel’s classic ’80s era He-Man toy franchise.

Smith will serve as the executive producer and showrunner of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, a limited series which focuses on the unresolved storylines of the classic series, picking up many of the characters’ journeys where they left off decades ago.

Zack Snyder and Jay Oliva have co-created an anime series for Netflix that will be set in the world of Norse mythology.

Zack Snyder, the director of big DC projects like Justice League and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, now wants to head to Asgard - but not Marvel's version of Asgard.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zack Snyder is teaming with his Justice League producing partner Jay Oliva to bring an anime based on Norse mythology to Netflix. Snyder will exec produce the series while Oliva will serve as showrunner. Stone Quarry Animation will produce alongside Snyder's wife, Deborah Snyder, and Wesley Coller.

The only information available about the content of the series thus far is that it will be "set in the world of Norse mythology." So shake off those cobwebs, Baldr, Njörðr, Fenrir, and any other god not currently tied down by IP restrictions.

The Russos will oversee the creation of an all new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains as they contend with stakes larger than any one world can hold.

A Magic: The Gathering animated series is coming to Netflix, Variety has learned.

Joe and Anthony Russo, Wizards of The Coast, and Hasbro’s Allspark Animation have teamed with Netflix to bring the fantasy game to the screen for the first time in the franchise’s history. The Russos will oversee the creation of an all new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are Magic’s magic-wielding heroes and villains.

“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” the Russos said.

Netflix has released their list of new titles coming in the month of June, as well as a last call for everything getting ready to leave the streaming service.

Highlights arriving this month include the fifth season of Netflix’s popular psychological thriller series “Black Mirror,” coming June 5, and Hilary Swank’s thriller “I Am Mother, coming June 7. And whether or not you were alive in 1993 when the original TV mini-series “Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City” came out, you can still appreciate the remake starring Ellen Page as Laura Linney’s on-screen daughter when it arrives June 7.

This month is the last chance to watch what is arguably the best moon mission movie, “Apollo 13,” starring the ultimate dream team, Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise. Other classics getting the boot include “Legally Blonde” and its sequel “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde,” along with “Friday the 13th” and “Pretty in Pink.

Netflix has ordered eight episodes of original anime series Gods & Heroes, set in the world of Greek mythology and featuring Jason O’Mara, Mamie Gummer and Chris Diamantopoulos, among others, in the voice cast.

The series (see the new poster below), from Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, chronicles the illegitimate son of Zeus, a young man tasked with saving heaven and earth despite the interference of a vengeful goddess and her monstrous forces.

“In Gods & Heroes we wanted to tell a wholly original story set in the beloved world of Greek mythology,” said creators Vlas and Charley Parlapanides in a statement. “We are thankful for such an amazing cast and for such great creative partners at Netflix and Powerhouse Animation, who continue to push the envelope and expand the anime genre in a manner we had only dreamed of.”

The Parlapanides will serve as writers and executive producers.

Netflix has done a fabulous job of expanding its, once-lacking, anime library with titles like Seven Deadly Sins, Godzilla, Aggretsuko, and Castlevania, just to name a small few. With 2019 being just around the corner, the streaming giant has announced their lineup of anime shows releasing next year. Chief among them is one of the most beloved, influential, and controversial animes of all time, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

In Spring 2019, the legendary anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion returns after being in distribution hell for quite some time. For several years, the rights issue was so tricky, DVDs weren't even allowed to be printed in several countries. Starring Retsuko, a red panda character developed from the same company that masterminded Hello Kitty, “Aggretsuko” (a portmanteau of “aggressive” and “Retsuko”) depicts the life of the 25-year-old accounting clerk by day who deals with workplace frustrations and injustices by growling death metal at her local karaoke joint at night. More than just escapist fare, Netflix’s anime series manages to fit in a remarkable amount of insight about society within 10 brief, 15-minute episodes.

The injustices seen at Retsuko’s workplace are typical: her overly demanding boss Director Ton who literally is a pig just practices his golf swing all day, the fawning brown-noser Tsunoda gets special treatment, and the office busybody doesn’t seem to have...
