- Sadie Dodge: [Lily shoots out the lantern that swings near Sadie's head] A warning shot?
- Lily O'Brien: A poor shot. I was aiming for your head.
- Earnest O'Brien: Why don't you come on in, Missus Hoagland?
- Sadie Dodge: Why, thank you, Mister O'Brien, but I'm not Missus Hoagland any longer.
- Lily O'Brien: Got right smart and divorced you, did he?
- Sadie Dodge: No. We believed in "until death do us part."
- Lily O'Brien: Suicide then.
- Sadie Dodge: [after Sadie describes the death of her husbands on her honeymoons] I'm just unlucky in love.
- Lily O'Brien: [Lily turns to Earnest] You were the luckiest in love.
- [Earnest reaches for her shoulder to acknowledge the sentiment, but stops when she finishes]
- Lily O'Brien: You were nigh unto being her first dead husband.
- Sadie Dodge: My Daddy was a wicked man.
- Lily O'Brien: The rotten apple doesn't fall from the insect infested decaying trunk of a tree.
- Lily O'Brien: [Angry at Earnest for allowing Sadie to leave] You let her honeysuckle yammer sweet talk her way right out the door with my ten thousand dollars! Stand aside and let me pass! Have I not a cause?
- Earnest O'Brien: [Looking at the portrait of Lily's homely mother] You would have thought, with all that inward beauty, a smidge of it would have seeped to the surface.
- Lily O'Brien: [She signals for Earnest to return to their side of the camp and away from Sadie] Come along, Mister O'Brien. that's the black-widow side. This is the happily married side.
- Earnest O'Brien: Where do I sleep?
- Earnest O'Brien: [Encircles their sleeping bags with a rope and sits down next to his angry wife] There. You're safe. No snakes shall pass tonight.
- Lily O'Brien: One already has.
- Earnest O'Brien: [Sadie's moan echoes out of the blackness of the mine] Sadie, be mindful, we don't want you to harm yourself.
- Lily O'Brien: [an incredulous look at her husband, then shouts down the mine] I covet the privilege!
- Lily O'Brien: Everywhere my Daddy traveled he carried paints, brushes, sketch pads, and pencils. Why does a man rob banks when he's created for something more?
