Belgorod, 1982. Katya Koroleva, a promising young athlete, is charged with a crime she didn't commit and could go to prison. She escapes from her home town and goes to Moscow. In the capital she gets a lucky break: she is hired as a sales girl at The House of Porcelain, a store famous throughout the USSR. No one in the staff suspects that their director, Semyon Grossman, is under KGB surveillance, conducted by General Luzhin. By a weird quirk of fate, Katya and Luzhin fall in love from the first sight.

Semyon Grossman's son Kostya returns to Moscow after serving in the army and working at the construction of the Baikal-Amur mainline. He doesn't want to take advantage of his father's connections and gets a job at his store as a simple porter. Anya falls in love with him but their romance is cut short when he witnesses her work as a KGB agent. Luzhin begins to court Katya. He finds out that Grossman sends money regularly to a woman in Belgorod (she happens to be the mother of Katya and Anya). Luzhin sends his operative to Belgorod.

After Luzhin visits Brenton in jail, the American dies suddenly. There is an audit in the House of Porcelain. Katya misplaces some of the books and risks losing her job. Anya leaves without telling Greg. Luzhin reprimands her. Luzhin's wife Tatyana learns about his affair with Katya and makes a public scene at the House of Porcelain.

After the scandal at the House of Porcelain, Luzhin leaves his wife for Katya. With Khorkin's help, Kozlov moves to Moscow and helps investigate the theft initiated by Luzhin to compromise Shchelokov. Alla has an affair with porter Slava who turns out to be a KGB agent. Luzhin finds out that Katya is a wanted person. After a fight with her sister Katya leaves home. Luzhin finds out that something valuable is missing from his hiding place.

Luzhin panics after finding his cache empty and demands immediate extraction from Greg. The witnesses Kozlov was counting on to testify suddenly die in prison. Greg asks Anya to marry him. Luzhin wants to help Katya despite her wanted status, but she already knows that Kostya is the only person she can trust. Kozlov offers Katya a deal: she must testify against Luzhin.

Katya and Kostya are happy and decide to move in together. Khorkin is looking for evidence of Grossman's embezzlement. Katya helps Grossman hide the evidence during the search, bu Kostya misreads the situation and breaks up with her. Luzhin orders to have Kostya arrested. Greg tells Luzhin that the CIA decided to proceed with his extraction.

The KGB puts pressure on Kostya to testify against his father. The MVD tasks Kozlov with compromising Luzhin , so he arrests Katya. Alla turns to Slava for help: he is the only person who can get Kostya out of jail. Luzhin thinks of a plan to make all charges against Katya go away. On the eve of Luzhin's extraction, Greg posts a letter to the KGB.

Anya and Greg get married. Luzhin makes an escape from the USSR. The alleged treason turns into a huge career boost for him. Luzhin arrests Grossman but soon is forced to let him go, otherwise the KGB will learn of the contents of his cache. Kostya finds out that Katya is pregnant. After Brezhnev's death the lives of the heroes change along with the country's history.
