Technically this was the #1 theatrical film in North America for five weeks in May 2020, though this was by virtue of being one of the only films playing, as most theaters were closed and most films were out of circulation due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Originally the movie was supposed to be called ''Hag'', it was changed to ''The Wretched'' due to negative feedback from test audiences.
When asked where did the inspiration for The Wretched come from, the Pierce Brothers said: ''We had the itch to do a new interpretation of the witch myth and build a new set of rules, we wanted to our version of the witch''.
Filming took place around Omena and Northport, Michigan, near the Pierces' hometown.
