The Blues guitar solos heard throughout were composed and played by Marc Maron. He said in an interview that at the end of every episode of his podcast WTF with Marc Maron, he does these guitar noodles and has hundreds of them stored away. Lynn Shelton didn't have the budget to hire a composer, so Maron let her choose and use selections she felt fit certain scenes.
This was writer/director Lynn Shelton's last film. She passed away from leukemia in May 2020, less than a year after its release.
The location used for filming the scenes set at the pawn shop run by Mel (Marc Maron) is an actual, working pawn shop, the Delta Pawn Shop at 3421 6th Ave South in Birmingham. The sign showing the name of the shop is visible in the movie.
A bulk of the dialogue in the film is improvised, including the long scene in the back of the truck heading to the compound. According to Marc Maron, all the script said on the page for that scene was, "They get to know each other." The four actors just made it up from there and director Lynn Shelton used the best lines.
Was filmed in Birmingham, Alabama.
