In real life, Kristin Davis has worked with the orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and has helped to bring attention to conservation issues, such as the illegal ivory trade. She produced the documentary Gardeners of Eden (2014), which also comments on the ivory trade and how it affects the possible extinction of elephants.
The film spent four years in development, as Kristin Davis wanted to secure ethical use of elephants and their safety. Davis did not want to use trained elephants for the film and has publicly thanked Netflix for agreeing to her terms.
