Iko Uwais in Wu Assassins (2019)

Review by harmony_of_the_void

Wu Assassins

6/10

Not what I expected...

I went into this show blind, having heard it was pretty good - knew nothing. I expected maybe something along the lines of Warrior set in modern times, and did not expect the "magical" element, which just never really seemed to work.

I don't think this works well as a live-action. It could have worked much, much better as an anime. The variation in acting ability between individuals is noticeable - you have standouts like Kathryn Winnick and Lewis Tan, Mark Dacascos - and others seem mannequins next to them. It's awkward to watch Winnick alongside the lead, as he's just... Wooden. This is accentuated by her talent and flair. As others have mentioned, the soundtrack not only doesn't fit the projected mood of the show, it doesn't fit the scenes in which it's used. The cgi is poor for current-year.

Overall... It's fine if you're in the mood for this sort of show. For 10 episodes at 40-something minutes each it's not a huge time commitment, but it's not one I expect I'll come back to rewatch.
