President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 17 recipients at the White House on Wednesday, including gymnast Simone Biles, former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and soccer champion Megan Rapinoe, as well as posthumous honors to Steve Jobs. Another recipient, Denzel Washington, was to attend, but tested positive for Covid, according to a White House official and the actor’s publicist.
Washington will receive the award at a later date, Biden said. At the ceremony, the president said that Washington “couldn’t be here but wanted to be.” The White House has testing guidelines in place for those who will be in close contact to the president.

After recording in a sound booth today for six hours on a “secret project,” actress Rosamund Pike was excited to learn that she’d notched her third Golden Globe nomination, for her turn in the darkly comedic Netflix thriller, I Care a Lot.
“It was unbelievable. Because I’d been so head-down in this project, I was blindsided by it, to be honest,” Pike tells Deadline, “which made it all the more magical, really. “
In the film from writer/director J Blakeson, the actress plays Marla, a con artist who steals from the elderly, by tricking judges into naming her their legal guardian—only to have her scheme disrupted, when she trifles with the wrong individual.
Pike says the character of Marla was immediately compelling, given her “grit and her balls, and her sort of self-proclaimed lioness status.”

Two-time Golden Globe Award nominee Rosamund Pike is back in contention this year for two more nominations. She contends in the Best Film Drama Actress category for the previously-released biopic “Radioactive,” in which she portrays double Nobel Prize-winning scientist Marie Curie, as well as in Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress as the antihero protagonist of the upcoming Netflix release “I Care a Lot.”
In her exclusive interview with Gold Derby about the latter film (watch the video above), she terms the life-or-death thriller “a dark comedy,” noting that adopting an “ironic and satirical” tone for this film was its “best bet at getting an audience and getting awareness for this subject matter” of elder abuse. An Oscar nominee for 2014’s “Gone Girl,” Pike stars in “I Care a Lot” as the fictional Marla Grayson, whom Netflix describes as “a professional, court-appointed guardian for dozens of elderly wards whose assets she...

Jake Tapper, the Washington-based correspondent for CNN, will likely get a new spotlight at the network after it said it would expand his weekday program to two hours and make him the lead anchor for all Washington events. The move is part of a broader shakeup of the cable-news outlet’s Washington coverage, which has taken over more of its schedule in the last few months of the Trump administration.
As part of the changes, Abby Phillip will take over as anchor of the weekend broadcast of “Inside Politics,” while Dana Bash will co-anchor the Sunday talk program “State of the Union” with Tapper. Tapper and Bash will each anchor two Sundays a month, beginning January 24th.

As the Trump Era draws to a close in Washington, Jake Tapper reflected on covering the past four years in a discussion with CNN compatriot Brian Stelter on “Reliable Sources.” The two talked about how during the Trump era their decisions on who in the White House to interview changed, particularly as it became clear that the administration would not provide much factual information.
Tapper said that at the start of Trump’s presidency, he regularly interviewed senior adviser Kellyanne Conway, but felt that the news value of such interviews diminished as he came to see her as a “filibusterer and a subject changer” who tried to dodge his questions. By the time the 2020 election began, he decided that there were some figures in Trumpworld that he simply didn’t want to have as guests on his CNN show “State of the Union.”

This might be stating the obvious, but Vin Diesel loves a franchise. The action star has the ninth installment in the Fast and Furious series in the can and awaiting release, he’ll make his seventh appearance as Groot when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in 2023, a Bloodshot sequel was recently announced and he’s also part of James Cameron’s Avatar sequels, and that’s without even mentioning that he’s still developing a fourth Riddick and a second Last Witch Hunter.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday that precautions implemented during the pandemic aren’t going away after a vaccine is distributed.
“I would recommend to people to not to abandon all public health measures just because you’ve been vaccinated,” Fauci told CNN anchor Jake Tapper on the Sunday show State of the Union.
Fauci insisted that masks and social distancing were here to stay.
“Because even though for the general population it might be 90 to 95 percent effective, you don’t necessarily know for you how effective it is.”
Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said he would be among those who stay masked.
“I can feel more relaxed in essentially not having the stringency that we have right now. But I think abandoning it completely would not be a good idea,” Fauci said.

During an awkward and cringe-worthy segment on Sunday’s episode of CNN’s “State of the Union,” Jake Tapper abruptly cut off the President’s campaign advisor and daughter-in-law Lara Trump after putting her in the hot seat for past criticisms she made about former Vice President Joe Biden’s public speaking skills.
Noting that Biden has worked to overcome a stutter, Tapper first ran a clip of one of his young supporters, a boy named Brayden Harrington, speaking at the Democratic National Convention about looking up to Biden as inspiration for overcoming his own stutter.
After the touching video, Tapper hit Trump with a clip of herself making fun of Biden’s speaking manner.
“Every time he comes on stage and they turn to him, I’m like Joe, can you get it out? Let’s get the words out, Joe. You kind of feel bad for him,” she said.

Apparently, Vin Diesel will not stop until everything he touches becomes a franchise. His career might be littered with several major box office bombs like Babylon A.D. and Bloodshot, but you have to at least admire the actor’s persistence for sticking with both the Fast and Furious and Riddick series for two decades.
Diesel’s third major franchise, though, not including his voice-only role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Groot, has a patchy track record to say the least. xXx is a time capsule of what people were into at the turn of the millennium, and the somewhat zeitgeisty flick did decent business after raking in $277 million at the box office, reinforcing the leading man’s credentials as Hollywood’s latest action hero.

On Aug. 11, 1943, Variety carried a story beginning “Angela Lansbury, 17-year-old English girl, is the colony’s latest Cinderella.” The story said she had gone from an unknown to movie star in only four days.
Since then, Lansbury has forged a career that defies all logic. She received supporting-actress Oscar nominations twice in her first two years of work. At age 41, she became a musical-comedy star with “Mame.” She became a TV star with “Murder, She Wrote” at age 59, an age when most actresses can’t find work. In the show’s 12-year run, she was one of the TV industry’s most powerful women. Maybe her biggest accomplishment: Though powerful women were sometimes maligned, it was thought you needed to be heartless to survive in showbiz, Lansbury has created a 77-year career and nobody has a bad word to say about her.

For their 15th album, Public Enemy are back on Def Jam, the powerhouse label they helped build with their golden-age hip-hop classics. It’s a well-timed return to the center of the industry. The rise of the Black Lives Matter movement has seen a reawakening of the protest radicalism that Pe originally brought to rap, from Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” to Lil Baby’s “The Bigger Picture” to DaBaby’s BLM remix of “Rockstar.” So when they ask, “Is rap still the black CNN?” — embodying the voice of the music...

“Most Dangerous Game” is the only nominee this year for Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series that is not an extension of an existing series. The 15-episode action thriller contends at the 2020 Emmys against three companion pieces to full-length series and “Reno 911!,” which has been revived in short form after a past life at full length.
Online tie-ins to “Better Call Saul” and “The Late Late Show” respectively won in 2017 and 2018. The former was on track last year to win again for its non-narrative “Employee Training” instructional advertisements, only to be disqualified for being too short — even for Short Form — and replaced by “State of the Union.” That original 10-episode miniseries, which had aired on SundanceTV, went on to sweep the field. It won Best Short Form Actor for Chris O’Dowd, Best Short Form Actress for Rosamund Pike and Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for director Stephen Frears,...

MSNBC is getting closer to making some important weekend plans.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable-news outlet is expected sometime this fall to decide on a successor for Joy Reid’s mid-morning weekend slot, according to two people familiar with the matter. Figuring out who might be among the contenders hasn’t been difficult. Some of the leading candidates have been filling in for Reid ever since she took over MSNBC’s weekday 7 p.m. hour earlier this summer.
Zerlina Maxwell, Jonathan Capehart and Tiffany Cross are among the people being considered for permanent duties in the two-hour weekend time period Reid anchored for four years. Executives are said to be interested in someone who brings with them a sizable following that they could harness for digital projects like podcasts, and other content initiatives. With the debut of Quibi, the short form categories at the Emmys may never be the same. The launch of the mobile streaming service hasn’t exactly been smooth: There were early questions about its business plan and whether consumers would want to pay for such content when free platforms including YouTube exist, subscriptions have already been far below expectations and many of those free trial deals are now expiring.
But with Quibi’s sheer volume of content, its submissions for the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be vast across three short form genre categories, as well as in the short form actor and actress categories. It’s also making a play for the character voice-over performance and original music and lyrics fields.

Quibi is not just another streaming service offering a stable of original programming. It sets itself apart from all of the competition because it features mobile content designed to be consumed in “quick bites.” Developed by former studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg and executive Meg Whitman, the streamer has attracted a bounty of A-list talent to its high-quality series and specials across a number of genres including dramas, comedies, reality and variety.

The Best Short Form Comedy/Drama Series slate has mostly been wiped clean for domination by Quibi, a new streaming service comprised entirely of short-form content. Netflix made a play last year with three entries, but they are sitting out this time. Also clearing the stage are two past nominees that were expressly produced to get Emmys for their headliners, as neither “An Emmy for Megan” nor “This Eddie Murphy Role is Mine, Not Yours” returned for a third season. Sundance swept last year with the critically-acclaimed “State of the Union,” but that network does not have a player this year.
See our rundown on 15 of Quibi’s new short form series.
So Quibi is filling that void with ten new shows, six of which are strong contenders. The app’s flagship is an adaptation of “Most Dangerous Game,” which is additionally being campaigned by CBS Television Studios under Viacom.

President Donald Trump on Sunday retweeted — and then deleted — a two-minute video that featured a Florida Trump supporter yelling, “White power!” while driving a golf cart by anti-Trump protesters.
“Thank you to the great people of The Villages,” Trump wrote in his tweet, referring to a popular retirement community outside of Orlando, Florida. “The Radical Left Do Nothing Democrats will Fall in the Fall. Corrupt Joe is shot. See you soon!!”
In the first seconds of the video, anti-Trump protesters can be heard yelling “racist” as a caravan of Trump protesters drive past in golf carts. In response, one man driving a golf cart that has signs reading “Trump 2020” and “America First” shouts back, “White power!” several times while pumping his fist in the air.

Jake Tapper talks to CNN viewers all week, but Sunday is when he knows he can have a longer conversation.
In July of 2016, David Brown, the police chief of Dallas, came to Tapper’s weekend program, “State of the Union” for an exchange about five police officers killed during an act of domestic terrorism. Their interview took place over three segments and nearly 40 minutes.
“One of the gifts of the Sunday show is that you can really talk for an extensive period of time with somebody and do a very long interview,” says Tapper, who engaged in his own sizable discussion with Variety earlier this week. “You don’t have to do 30 guests for three minutes each. Exclusive: AMC is breaking new ground with Pantheon, a primetime animated drama series. The network is making a big bet on the hourlong project from Turn creator/executive producer Craig Silverstein and AMC Studios, with an order for two eight-episode seasons.

While 61st Street is designed for a limited run, Pantheon is envisioned as an ongoing series. It extends AMC’s streak of experimentation with genre and format. Yesterday I wrote up on the names of films and TV shows that would be leaving Netflix over the month of March. Now, the circle of life streaming services dictates that today I bring you the names of films and TV shows that will be joining the new kid on the block, Disney Plus. Some of these titles will be familiar to those who read the previous piece, too, and they at least start out easily recognizable.
March 1 – Doctor Doolittle 2, Ice Age (everybody knows what they are). March 4 – Black Panther (ex-Netters). March 5 – Bedtime Stories (getting obscurer). March 6 – The Finest Hours, Three on the Run (completely lost now).
This is where things get messy, as we’ve got a whole bunch of TV stuff that I doubt anyone is subscribing to Disney Plus for, except… maybe Star Wars: The Clone Wars? Some people are into that, for some reason. Anyway, if...

One of the most memorable and star-studded creature features of the ’90s, Anaconda is being reimagined at Columbia Pictures.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Evan Daugherty (writer of Killing Season and co-writer of 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman) has been hired to write a screenplay for an "an all-new and all-modern take" on Anaconda.
While plot details have yet to be unveiled, THR reveals that the studio is "hoping to take a Meg-style approach" to the reimagining. According to Box Office Mojo, the 2018 colossal shark movie brought in more than $530 million worldwide on an estimated $130 million production budget. A producer and director have not been announced for the new Anaconda film at this time.
Released in 1997, Anaconda followed a film crew and a guide with a hidden agenda deep into the Amazon jungle, where they found themselves prey to a massive snake of prehistoric proportions.

Two of AMC Networks’ most offbeat hits are musical comedy Sherman’s Showcase and short-form series State of the Union.
The group is now looking at the future of both shows. State of the Union aired on SundanceTV and Sherman’s Showcase airs on IFC.
The good news for the latter is that the company is set to give it a bigger slot on AMC when it comes back for an hour-long Black History Month Spectacular special this summer. The special was announced at AMC Network’s presentation at the TCA winter press tour but Deadline understands that it will air on both AMC and IFC.
Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios told Deadline that it will consider a second season of the show, which was created by and starrs former Late Night with Jimmy Fallon writers Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, after the special airs.
