Based in the song of the same name, by the 80's Brazilian rock band Legião Urbana. This is the second movie based on a Renato Russo (Legião Urbana vocalist and lyrics composer)'s song. The first was Brazilian Western (2013), also based in a song with this same name. We Are So Young (2013) is Russo's biopic.
Gabriel Leone only wore superior fake braces for the teenage role of Eduardo, as wearing both superior and inferior braces made saying his lines difficult, as well as his mouth "look huge". He also wore prosthetic pimples. Alice Braga was reportedly impressed with his genuinely teenager looks.
Alice Braga learned to ride a motorbike for her role of Mônica. "I couldn't do it [before getting the role]! And I was really nervous about it because it's very specific of her, and I wanted something unique with the motorbike, so I wanted to be and safe".
The original song makes Eduardo's age of 16 clear, but only hints that Mônica is older as she is graduating in Medicine. In real life, Alice Braga and Gabriel Leone were born ten years apart.
