The first season is set in 2399, 20 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) (which was set in the year 2379). Using the Stardate format established in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), this would place the start of the series just after Stardate 76000.
The Chateau Picard vineyard first appeared in Family (1990). It was run by Jean-Luc Picard's brother Robert and his wife Marie, and their son René. Jean-Luc would learn in Star Trek: Generations (1994) that Robert and René had both burned to death in a fire, leaving Jean-Luc as the last in the Picard line.
Picard's dog, Number One, is played by a rescue pit bull named Dinero. Patrick Stewart insisted that Picard have a dog of that breed, as he and his wife volunteer with a pit bull rescue organization.
Writer and producer Michael Chabon commented that while Dinero is a very friendly and affectionate dog, he's not much of an actor. Several planned scenes with Number One had to be reworked because Dinero wouldn't take direction.

Sir Patrick Stewart cites his previous film Logan (2017) as an influence on the series, pointing out that in both features the characters are still the same but their world has changed and they have to adjust to these changes. Both Jean-Luc Picard and Charles Xavier are characters that Stewart returned to repeatedly after years-long hiatuses. Stewart admits that Logan encouraged him to attempt something different with his role.
