The novel is set in 1872 and whilst there had been prototype cars constructed before this date neither they nor airships ("Zeppelins") would exist until decades later.
With the same conditions as Fogg worked under it would be much more difficult as many of the rail and sea links which he used have been replaced by air travel. In 1989 ex-Monty Python star Michael Palin completed the journey for a BBC series in the timeframe but arguably he broke the rules by driving in a car across Saudi Arabia when he fell behind schedule.
