FAQ

Raised by Wolves

FAQ

In episode seven it's referred to as "fuel blood".

Ridley Scott, who directed the first two episodes for Raised by Wolves, has used condensed milk for the android blood in Alien and other films since then. He discusses how he chose to do this again for Raised by Wolves in an interview with the New York Times and referenced again by other media outlets such as Mashable.

Judging from the technology in this series, it's very possible that it is very far in the future. Maybe the Mithraics overtook Christianity, wiped it out, and waged war on anyone disagreeing with them, including atheists. Our own history shows an intolerance of rival beliefs. Think Crusades. There is a current intolerance between some Christians and Muslims even today.

Edit Hmmm, this was the bit I found hard to swallow, that some emergent religion replaced all current world religions, and became space-faring. A fledgling religion would be strangled by the established ones long before it became popular. Just think how intertwined politics and religion are in the USA, how would a new religion gain the influence it required? It simply wouldn't.

Religion isn't intertwined with politics everywhere in the world. Consider Japan, just as one of the many examples. Generally, as a rule in most societies. As fact-based beliefs and rational education increases, religiosity and superstitions decrease. Americans have had a problem with superstitious and unreasonable beliefs, ever since they made it a tax-free industry that can promote irrational ideas. Example: Televangelists teaching people that a smack on the forehead, will cure cancer or other illnesses... Praise God, and all that.

Edit- Side note What if we are not talking about a distant future? Could this show tells us a story about an ancient forgotten past? I Imagine an old civilization destroyed by war running away from earth just to come back after several centuries to recolonize earth forgetting who they were in the process...

Edit: The date of the scenes on Earth is stated in the show as 2150, so clearly the writers did not intend it to be a far distant future or past. It's also stated (avoiding spoilers) that some things come from "ancient scripture", so either the characters are deluded about history of their history is different from ours. The Mithraic religion is clearly heavily inspired by Christianity and characters even use common Christian sayings. Conclusion: This is a fictional setting designed to be relatable to its audience.
