The Other Half

Chandreyee Ghosh turns in a remarkably sensitive lead performance as Paromita. This role-and the film-establishes that there is a mindset which manifests itself as a "glass ceiling" against women in the workforce. It also demonstrates that the same mindset also exists in homes, where they are expected to prioritize their family & household over their career.

I further appreciated how the film portrays the situation at hand. The (all too common) way society, including family, treats the protagonist is infuriating.

Chakraborty, the writer & director, could easily have made an angry movie. But, instead, the picture tells the story in a way that is quiet. The frustration from being the victim of a double standard is there. So is the fight against that type of injustice.

But it's all handled in an understated manner. Much like many real-life Paromitas would handle it.

And it can be argued the film is all the better because of that.
