The 2019 TV series The Wall is a critical look at the fall of the Berlin Wall and its consequences, and is based on real events involving three sisters whose fates intersected.
Whilst the Berlin Wall was in existence the number of people migrating East to West, legally or otherwise, decreased by over 90%.
Up to six million people are estimated to have emigrated from East to West Germany, which is around 15% of the population and mostly skilled workers. Two thirds were in the period after WW2 and before the Berlin Wall was built, a similar number have moved West since the fall of the wall but approx 2m have migrated back the other way.
