Directors Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert previously worked on the short documentary The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant (2009). It is about how the plant was shut down by General Motors, a topic in this movie.
Julia Reichert was diagnosed with urothelial cancer by the time this documentary was released in 2019. She would make 3 more works (9to5: The Story of A Movement (2020), Dave Chappelle: 8:46 (2020) and Untitled Dave Chappelle Documentary (2021)) before passing away in 2022.
The first film released from the new production company Higher Ground, founded by former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.
Directors Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert live together in the city of Dayton, Ohio. This film has particular resonance for the place they call home.
The film had already been completed and shown at the Sundance Film Festival when it was optioned by the Obamas's Higher Ground Productions. Their deal with Netflix ensured wider distribution for the documentary.
