Desus Nice is working on a travel series for Amazon.
The comedian, who is best known for hosting Showtime’s late-night series Desus & Mero, is working with Story Syndicate and Amazon MGM Studios on the project.
A pilot presentation is being shot for Prime Video.
It wouldn’t mark the first time that Desus, otherwise known as Daniel Baker, has gone down the travel show route; he was previously a guest on Anthony Bourdain’s CNN series Parts Unknown, where he took the host to joints across the Bronx.
Story Syndicate is best known for producing docs and docuseries including HBO’s I’ll Be Gone In The Dark, Netflix’s Harry & Meghan and Hulu’s Stolen Youth: Inside The Cult at Sarah Lawrence.

Exclusive: Jax Media, an Imagine Entertainment company, is shutting down its development operations. I hear the announcement was made during a staff meeting yesterday. Moving forward, all development will be consolidated and run through Imagine Television. Jax’s development team will wind down by year’s end when its executives, led by Jax Head of TV Dave Binegar, who joined a year ago, and UK Creative Director Katie Gahamire, who came on board in April, will depart.
The move signals Jax reverting to its original core business as a production services company. That will continue under new head of production Yolanda T. Cochran who was just hired for the role, replacing Jake Fuller who stepped down to focus on independent production, mostly sports-related.
Also staying on are Hussain Casey-Ahmed, who joined in April and runs production in the UK, as well as John Nemeth and Morgan Howard, who oversee production in New York.

It’s been a strange year for late-night and things are only going to get weirder.
All of the late-night shows were dark between May and October as as a result of the writers strike and the genre lost one of its longer-running shows as The Late Late Show, which has run for over 5,000 episodes since 1995, is to be replaced by an old Comedy Central game show.
The change hasn’t been quite as significant as last year when James Corden and Trevor Noah revealed they’d be stepping down, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new regime killed Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal and Desus & Mero, who, for some, were the duo to reinvigorate the field, broke up.
Late-night, it seems, is just ticking along.

The Daily Show is currently going through a lineup of guest hosts as it continues to search for a permanent one.
Last night, the Comedy Central show debuted a new twist – two hosts behind the desk.
Correspondents Michael Kosta, who has been hosting this week, the show’s first week back since the writers strike, and Ronny Chieng joined forces on Thursday night’s show.
It marked the first time that the show had two hosts behind the desk, a strategy that has been proposed as a new format going forward.
Last year, Deadline revealed that The Daily Show was considering hosting duos and trios to replace Trevor Noah with correspondents including Desi Lydic as a potential contender.
Chieng, who has starred in movies including M3gan and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, said, “Tonight, you’re getting two hosts for the price of one.”

Four days before its return, “The Daily Show” has finally announced its guest host lineup. Comedian and “Daily Show” correspondent Michael Kosta will lead off the first week starting Monday.
For the rest of 2023, the Comedy Central late night show will be hosted by guest hosts. This rotation will feature a combination of familiar and new faces. For example, as previously mentioned, Kosta is set to take over the late night show’s first week back, and there will be a planned news team takeover the week of November 20. Also Leslie Jones, who hosted in mid-January, and Sarah Silverman, who hosted in mid-February, are set to return.
As for “The Daily Show” hosting newcomers, Desus Nice, Charlamagne tha God and Michelle Wolf are all set to lead their own weeks. None of these additions are new to the world of late night. Best known for his collaborations with The Kid Mero,...

Bipoc late-night and variety show writers say the lack of diversity on-screen and behind it is due to a lack of chances and opportunity given to people of color.
“If you look at traditionally… the hosts that we remember a lot, the ones from those 11:30 p.m. 12:30 a.m. shows, they got so many chances,” Greg Iwinski, who has written for Comedy Central’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” and CBS’ “Late Show With Stephen Colbert” said Thursday during TheWrap’s strike roundtable, “Bipoc Late-Night and Variety Writers Speak Out.”

Exclusive: The late-night community is over the moon after it emerged that there will be five Emmy nominations this year.
Emmy voting opened today, and Deadline understands that there are 19 submissions in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category, far more than expected, which, given the math, means that there will be five nominations this year.
One late-night source told Deadline this was “unexpected” but a “positive” move, meaning that that the sector no longer has to lament the loss of another Emmy slot.
Given that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has been moved to the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category this year after seven consecutive wins for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, it is a boon for The Daily Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live!

John Oliver will not be picking up his eighth straight Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series at this September’s gala.
The Last Week Tonight host will instead be battling it out with Saturday Night Live, and potentially A Black Lady Sketch Show, in the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category after the TV Academy made a number of changes at the end of last year.
The move means the late-night talk show Emmy race will crown another victor – the first non-Oliver win since The Daily Show with Jon Stewart won the award in 2015. Ironically, Stewart is now back in the same category with his Apple series, The Problem with Jon Stewart, after moving from the Outstanding Hosted Non-Fiction Series category.
It also means the race is far more wide open than it has been for years with shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Seth Meyers...

A series of changes have taken place at Showtime. Variety has confirmed the network has canceled “Ziwe” after just two seasons and has picked up Mandy Patinkin’s “Seasoned” to series, delivering a six-episode order.
Hosted and executive produced by comedian Ziwe Fumudoh, the talk show focused on presenting trending hot topics concerning race, politics and other cultural issues as well as musical numbers, interviews, guest stars and comedic sketches. Guests on Season 2 included Drew Barrymore, Rowan Blanchard, Blake Griffin, Emily Ratajkowski and Mia Khalifa, among others. The series first debuted in 2021.
With the loss, that leaves Showtime without a current late night talk show following the cancellation of “Desus & Mero” (which Ziwe also served as a writer on before moving to her own show). The changes come as part of Showtime’s reevaluation of the programming slate after MTV Entertainment Group president and CEO Chris McCarthy stepped in...

Showtime has canceled Ziwe’s self-titled variety show after two seasons, sources close to the show told TheWrap on Wednesday.
After “Desus & Mero” ended last year, it was the last remaining late-night series on the cabler.
It was also one of the few talk shows hosted by a woman after Comedy Central pulled the plug on “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” in July 2022 after seven seasons.

Ziwe Fumudoh’s list of iconic guests has run short. The comedian’s Showtime talk show “Ziwe” has been canceled at the premium cable network after two seasons, IndieWire has confirmed.
In addition, the channel has given a six-episode season order to “Seasoned,” a new comedy show starring real-life married couple Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody; co-created and co-written by their son Gideon Grody-Patinkin and Ewen Wright, the show is directly inspired by the pair’s real-life relationship. The channel also passed on the pilot for “The Wood,” a comedy series based on the 1999 film from Rick Famuyiwa. Finally, Showtime acquired “Heist 88,” a crime thriller film starring Courtney B. Showtime is shaking up its executive ranks, with Gary Levine taking on the role of senior creative advisor for the premium network and Jana Winograde departing, studio boss Chris McCarthy announced today. Both formerly co-presidents of entertainment at Showtime, the news comes amid the company’s eventual rebranding and integration with Paramount+ later this year.
As co-presidents, both Levine and Winograde were responsible for developing and supervising all aspects of Showtime Networks programming across all genres, including comedy, drama, unscripted, documentaries and films. The outlet that unexpectedly crashed the top Emmy race; the home to complicated LGBTQ and female storytelling for an intriguing, glimmering moment; the place that today, even in its attenuated state, airs “Yellowjackets” and “Ziwe.”
For a long moment leading up until very recently, Showtime has felt like something less than what it once was — perhaps inevitable, given that “what it once was” was a channel that punched so far above weight that it seemed at times close to an equal of HBO. And the news that it is in some way changing form, taking on the cumbersome name “Paramount+ With Showtime” and seeing its highest-profile forthcoming series, “Three Women,” get offloaded before airing, suggests that even its more mediocre days as a stand-alone television network will soon be in the rear-view mirror.

The comedian, otherwise known as Daniel Baker, was filling in as a guest host on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, a month after it emerged that he had split up with late-night partner The Kid Mero and their show Desus & Mero was ending after four seasons.

Greetings from Variety Awards Headquarters! Today is August 12, 2022, which means final round voting begins today, followed by 10 days until final round voting ends on August 22. As the number of major late-night shows continue to shrink, so does the Television Academy’s window to figure out how to handle the variety talk and variety sketch categories. After the org faced massive blowback in 2020 when it attempted to re-merge talk and sketch (reversing that plan after producers cried foul), it has resisted making any more changes. But given the monumental shift going on in the genre, the Academy will have no choice but map out new rules for 2023.

One of the more shocking pop culture developments of 2022 was the breakup of Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, the longtime comedy duo who turned their hit podcast “Bodega Boys” into a comedy empire that culminated in the late night talk show “Desus & Mero,” which ran for four seasons on Showtime. Last month, the stars abruptly revealed that they would not only be ending their Showtime series, but also their creative partnership as a whole.
At the time, a Showtime spokesperson told IndieWire, “Showtime’s late-night talk show ‘Desus & Mero’ will not be returning for a fifth season. Its final episode aired Thursday, June 23. Desus Nice and The Kid Mero will be pursuing separate creative endeavors moving forward.”
Since then, fan speculation has run rampant about whether the breakup was the result of a feud between the two comedians. But that’s not the way Desus and Mero see it.

The two gained popularity with their “Bodega Boys” podcast, which launched in 2015, and then became late-night staples with their Showtime series “Desus & Mero.” Fans were shocked when the network announced last month that “Desus & Mero” was abruptly ending after four seasons.
“Desus and I had discussed pursuing separate interests over a year prior to the show coming to an end and that conversation solidified us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to operate independent of one another,” Mero said on the podcast. “As far back as June of last year we were both pitching or looking to join existing projects as individuals.”

Samantha Bee’s “Full Frontal” is getting a kick in the rear from Warner Bros. Discovery.
The show, which became a signature program for the large cable network TBS, “will not return to the network in the fall,” according to a statement from Bee’s representatives.
“As we continue to shape our new programming strategy, we’ve made some difficult, business-based decisions,” TBS said in a statement. “We are proud to have been the home to ‘Full Frontal With Samantha Bee’ and thank Sam, and the rest of the Emmy-nominated team for their groundbreaking work. We celebrate this extraordinarily talented cast and crew and look forward to exploring new opportunities to work with them in the future.”
Over the course of seven seasons, Bee’s “Full Frontal” brought an aggressive and saucy voice to TV’s late-night arena, and one of the few programs led by a female point-of-view. Bee,...

When James Corden cuts ties with CBS’ “Late Late Show” next year, he may leave with more than people expected.
CBS is considering replacing Corden’s distinct program with a multi-host panel, according to three people familiar with the matter, a sign of how late-night is changing as viewers sample the best of the programs via social media rather than watching them in their wee-hours’ time slot. Corden has decided to leave “The Late Late Show” in the spring of 2023. A panel format could encompass a wide range of concepts, such as the news-roundtable program “Politically Incorrect,” which Bill Maher led on ABC late-nights between 1997 and 2002; the gossipy “Chelsea Lately” that was led by Chelsea Handler on E! between 2007 and 2014; or even the frenetic game-show stylings of “@midnight,” which aired in late night on Comedy Central between 2013 and 2017.

Desus Nice and The Kid Mero are known for their wide-ranging and incisive celebrity interviews with everyone from former President Barack Obama and New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Season 4 guests such as Michelle Yeoh and Denzel Washington. For even a seasoned journalist, sitting down opposite those bold-faced names could be cause for intimidation or apprehension. But the hosts of Showtime’s “Desus & Mero” are anything but cautious.
“We meet people that other people completely lose it talking to, and we’re just like, ‘Hey, you used to be the president, Obama, has was that?’” Desus tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “We’re on the same level as these people and that comes through in the conversation. We’re never going to be like, ‘So, oh my God, this is so great, Denzel.’ It’s going to be like, ‘Okay, Denzel, you’re in Hollywood, we’re in Hollywood.

Last Year’s Winner: “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: It is one thing to point out how “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” has won this category every year since 2016, but to further belabor the point of just how much “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” looms large over the category, that show or a show hosted by an alumni of that show has won Outstanding Variety Talk Series/Outstanding Variety Series every year since 2003. Even if John Oliver were to not win, there are still three other contenders here that could keep that monumental streak going.
Notable Ineligible Series: “Ziwe” (submitted as a Variety Sketch Series)

It’s the first Monday in May and Desus Nice and The Kid Mero are sadly not preparing for a Met Gala debut. Instead, Desus quipped, “We’re just going to a gala where they’re showing the Mets game.”
That kind of quick wit is a good example of why more and more people have gravitated to the duo hosting Showtime’s first ever late-night show “Desus & Mero.” Approaching a decade since they were first paired together on the podcast-turned-web-series “Desus vs. Mero,” the New York natives born Daniel Baker and Joel Martinez have built a brand that grows stronger each day, staking their claim as the No. 1 show in late night until it manifests into reality.
While the series already collected a Writers Guild of America Award last year for Best Comedy/Variety Talk Series, it has yet to receive Emmys attention. But Mero told IndieWire over Zoom that its fourth season,...

Empowerment TV is back, Ziwe style.
The eponymous late night variety series, hosted by comedy writer and influencer Ziwe, returns April 29 on Showtime streaming and on demand before debuting on air May 1.
With guests like Ilana Glazer calling Ziwe’s interview style “uncomfortable” and controversial son of Tom Hanks, Chet Hanks, doubling down on his behavior, Ziwe’s apology cam will no doubt get a lot of use this season.
Season 2 will feature all-new interviews, musical numbers, guest stars, and sketches. Showtime on demand and streaming subscribers will continue to get first looks at episodes every Friday before they officially premiere on Showtime Sunday nights at 11 p.m. Et/Pt.
“Ziwe” is produced by A24 for Showtime, with Ziwe serving as an executive producer along with Jamund Washington, Jo Firestone, and Hunter Speese.
Ziwe landed her Showtime series in April 2021 after hosting a viral Instagram Live series questioning cultural figures on race.

Showtime’s late-night series Desus & Mero is taking the week off after Desus Nice, otherwise known as Daniel Baker, was hit by Covid-19. The series, which moved from twice a week to weekly with the return of its fourth season earlier this month, will be postponed due to the positive test.
Desus said that he’s been isolating, is vaxxed and boosted and “right now my only symptom is boredom.”
It comes a year after The Kid Mero, otherwise known as Joel Martinez, also contracted Covid. In that case, the show carried on but was tweaked to include some pre-taped segments.
The duo have been back in the studio since June 2021.
The launch of the fourth season March 10 saw them bring in their first official showrunner in J.D. Amato, the executive producer of The Chris Gethard Show and senior field producer of The Problem with Jon Stewart.

Showtime’s “Desus & Mero” is reverting back to a once-a-week schedule. The critically acclaimed late-night talker returns for Season 4 on Thursday, March 10 at 11 p.m. Et, with Oscar nominee Denzel Washington as the show’s first guest.
Also new to the show is J.D. Amato (“The Chris Gethard Show”), who has joined “Desus & Mero” as showrunner and executive producer. Hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero are back in studio for the season premiere. Other guests set for this season include Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland, Pusha T and Damson Idris.
“Desus & Mero” had most recently aired twice a week, on Sundays and Thursdays; but the once-a-week schedule will allow the hosts and producers to focus their energies on perfecting one episode a week. “Desus & Mero” debuted on Showtime in February 2019 as a weekly show, but by April had expanded to twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.

Desus & Mero are back with a fourth season but they’re cutting their on-screen time in half.
Showtime is moving the late-night show from twice a week to one episode a week beginning Thursday March 10 with the launch of its fourth season.
The pair also have their first official showrunner – J.D. Amato, exec producer of The Chris Gethard Show, and senior field producer of The Problem with Jon Stewart, joins in that role and exec producer.
The moves come as the pair are looking to get back to basics after two years of Covid-affected production – although arguably Desus Nice and The Kid Mero handled shooting from home better than most. The intention is to return to the original weekly schedule to put their creative efforts into one episode.
The series initially launched on Thursday, February 21, 2019, but by April 2019, they were going twice a week with another episode on Mondays. In...

With so many options available to prospective viewers at a given moment – everything from weekly episodes to binge-watches to even memes on social media – how do some of the most celebrated writers in Hollywood consider the audience when sitting down to write a script? It depends, say the writers on our “Meet the Experts” Writers Guild Award nominees panel – including Josh Gondelman from “Desus & Mero,” Brad Ingelsby from “Mare of Easttown,” Brett Goldstein from “Ted Lasso,” Little Marvin from “Them” and Paul Simms from “What We Do in the Shadows.”

Back in 2017, when Josh Gondelman won his second of four consecutive Emmy Awards as part of the writing staff of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” Emmys host and late-night fixture Stephen Colbert joked of the weekly HBO show, “Apparently they’re so high quality they can only make one a week.” That kind of good-natured ribbing from daily late-night hosts as shows like “Last Week Tonight” and Gondelman’s current home, Showtime’s “Desus & Mero,” have eschewed the nightly format is expected. But as Gondelman explains during Gold Derby’s “Meet the Experts” panel for 2022 Writers Guild Awards nominees, producing a late-night comedy series outside of the expected daily drumbeat is far from a walk in the park.
“I think that we really tried to hold ourselves to a high standard of making it real fun and funny for the audience to watch. We’re not trying to put filler on the air,...

When Trevor Noah takes to a new stage Monday evening and re-starts Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” after a hiatus, he may look around and wonder where some of his competitors have gone.
In recent months, WarnerMedia decided to end its long-running “Conan” late-night program on TBS with Conan O’Brien.
