I don't get all the 1 reviews it's not great but it's not horrible either I have definitely seen ALOT worse. It's not scary but It has descent acting & alot of cool & dark art work throughout the house which I liked.
I have seen movies that deserve a 1 rating or even a negative rating but not this movie. The Assent was a bit slow & absolutely not scary. I would not call it a horror movie but a psychological thriller. I went into it with very low expectations so maybe that's why I have a higher opinion than others but there is no way I would rate it a 1. I thought most of the acting was good, atmosphere was good, plot was believable & I watched it all the way without losing interest. Not a great movie, not a horror movie but not a movie I regret watching, better than a lot of the crap they make now days.

The story had decent foundations and some good twists, but it was so poorly executed you could see every plot twist coming from a mile away. In the end most of the characters didn't matter at all, there's no resolution of any kind, the whole thing relied heavily on jump scares that didn't even work well, and you're left with more questions than answers. Overall a crappy movie in an oversaturated genre. This movie had no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Found this at Walmart and took a chance. Regrets. I know some people are dramatic with writing reviews but I can't believe this.
How does a movie like this get made so poorly and have a decent budget behind it? It has no pace, not a single good actor, and no story. It doesn't make sense at all lol

Pearry Reginald Teo's 'The Assent' has a strong start, a convincing performance by its lead actor, and nice art direction, all of which competes with a script that fails to do anything interesting to breathe some life into a tired genre.

All this movie needed was another pass on the script. The twist at the end is really cool but you can see it coming from a mile away. The writer/director needed to work on the script to hide it more so it wasn't so obvious. Had they done this properly it would have raised this movie up a bunch of notches.
It's not really scary though it has some great creepy atmosphere going on. Some of the visuals are great, particularly the demon with all those faces and the creepy gyrating woman. But overall not horrible. It doesn't deserve such low scores.

There are movies that may have lost from the get go. Can you imagine any other movie .. like the Exorcist? I mean I know I can't. And yet I give this an 8 rating? I know sounds too crazy to be true. But it is because this really low budget attempt is not another copycat. It does things differently and it does them quite well in my humble opinion.
And that is not an easy feat ... actually while you should be able to see certain things coming, I would like to believe that the movie still has a few surprises up its sleeves. It also is very well shot and the tension is there from start to finish ... the ending maybe slacking a little bit ... still more than just a good effort! And very well played to by everyone involved!

I bought this movie after having scene that scary ass trailer and the awesome poster. I wasn't disappointed, well maybe a little. It's the story of a single father played by a sexy Robert Kazinski of Hot Pursuit. Strange things begin happening in the house especially the appearance of a dope ass monster. And than his son begins to transform and can possibly be possessed. It's a familiar story. Its obviously limited budget wise but there's lots of cool touches especially the appreciated and impressive practical effects. There's also a somewhat surprising twist that is quite intriguing. All in all it's a familiar but decent watch that merits a light reccomendation, especially considering it's 4.99 to buy on Amazon streaming now.

Boring... So slow I fall zzz 3 times and had to skip forward...
Ending makes no sense either.... I'd think you have to sign a contract or some sort with blood to assent but it turns out it's a quick yet/no and he is done... Stupid waste of time

This is definitely the worst movie I've ever seen. What makes it worse, it they basically replay the entire movie towards the end of it. As though we needed an explanation to know what was happening. It's not a mind bender, there's nothing surprising, other than how bad this is. I don't understand how an actor, or a director reads the script and says "yes, this is a project I'll take on!" There's no story, no character development, no arch, no climax. The acting is horrible, as is the directing, the editing, the visuals, everything about this sucks. It wouldn't even pass as a comedy, you know, how when a scary movie is bad, but you can still laugh at it? No. One thing it does do though, is if you're a screenwriter or would like to be one, it gives you hope. If something this bad can get made, and the put on Netflix, then you'll for sure be able to get yours done and distributed as well.
There's a few pros and cons here. A new approach on exorcism yet lots of horror clichés and a twist at the end that was trying too much to make this stand out, decent acting for most scenes yet not all, sometimes great visuals like the shadow moving and then a laughable worm thing. Not that bad, but far from constant quality.

There were a lot of things I quite liked with this movie and things that were quite unsuccessful.
The aesthetics as far as set dressing, lighting and cinematography were extremely successful. The movie looked really great and very cool/ atmospheric. Whoever the actual artist is of the pieces in the movie was is dope and the person who decorated that house did a great job.
Another positive is the lead actor. He was great. So natural and believable, he gave a great performance. Probably my favorite part, in a sea of the opposite. Unfortunately basically everyone else not only paled in comparison to him, they also just didn't do a great job. The juxtaposition between the casting of the lead and the casting of everyone else was super confusing. They lucked out on getting him cause he was a saving grace. The only other person who was close to good was the babysitter. A lot of the actors, performances and character choices were quite distracting and did the movie a disservice. They didn't have much help with a blatantly subpar script. The dialogue edged on cliche, wooden and often times felt uninspired.
The story wasn't anything wildly original and a bit predictable, however I still liked it. With some great aesthetics, an engaging plot, a great lead and some spooky monsters/effects I found this movie to be a bit of a pleasant surprise and while not perfect, entertaining. Would recommend.

I mean yeah this genre has been played to death but I almost always enjoy it. This one is quite unique and plays out like a demonic acid trip. I thought it was pretty cool.
The ending feels weak. It lacked oomph although I still enjoyed it and although I saw it coming. I wasn't completely sure, but I had a general idea. The main twist is really pretty easy to see coming. But that didn't really make it less enjoyable for me.
The overall atmosphere is great. A really solid low budget exorcism movie. I would recommend to horror fans.

This movie was creative, well-written / acted, and a solid source of entertainment. Even the set design was fascinating; I'd love to pick the brains behind this movie's design and execution! Spooky without edging into cheap scares, and there's a lot of heart in the story. You can tell this was somebody's passion project.

Side note- has anyone else noticed how... petty (? probably the wrong word but idk) the consumer reviews for everything streamable have gotten during quarantine? I had to stop using them as criteria for my queue-building like six months back.

The 3 star rating, and all the bad reviews I can't at ALL understand. This film is not the typical possession film, why not? Because it's not JUST about the jump scares, or the blood...I was VERY surprised that I grew to care about the characters in this movie, they really give us reason to care...this dad is struggling and not just the typical "I lost someone so I'm sad"...but he's suffering from a mental illness.
The movies sets all have a very dark and grim element to them, I guess to make us feel like we are in the characters gloomy world.
Okay, so the story is very solid, the acting is above average, the characters are very good...how about the heart of the movie? The demon possession?
LOVED IT!!! The scene when we first see the demon in the halway that has those strange spider like legs? I LOVED IT!!!! A+ for creature design, you never really get to understand what the demon looks like just because it's so abstract, it looks like something out of Silent Hill, and they did a great job!!!
So...HOW ON EARTH did this film get only a 3 star rating????? My only guess is because it's main audience was likely fans of "The Grudge", "Vatican Tapes" "Parabormal Activity" and all those other shallow, heartless, JUMP SCARE movies that don't make us care...they substitute story and character development with buckets of blood and jump scares.
This film is a shining example of originality in a sea of copy after copy. The demon is something I've never seen, the way the possessed persons eyes are, I've never seen that before either.
I'm VERY harsh and critical of haunting/possession films because they're always the same junk. This was different!!
Was it an amazing film?? No, I'm just in shock at the low rating and can't understand it at all.

Another basic possession movie.
I didn't even bother watching it in full.
Don't lose your time here if you have already watched more than... like two or three horror movies.

A film about possession and exorcism that feels bland, shallow and unengaging. A man, who suffers from mental illness, thinks his child is possessed. The setting is very grey and bleak, the father's situation is poor. He is an artist who's creations are dark and haunting imagery.
Not enjoyable for me.
