Very quirky and enjoyable
This movie really took me by surprise. A great script, brilliant dialogue and great performances by all the characters. An up-lifting story of someone who was lost and then found. Nice to have a positive message, when so often in this day and age it's the exact opposite. Liked it a lot.
More real than you expect
Pete Davidson's semi autobiographical movie is not the dirty, empty, humor packed event you think it's going to be. I was surprised to see just how real it was in the way it dealt with heavy subjects, and how people use humor to deflect those topics and cope. As someone who does this a lot it caught me off guard to see a movie that's basically made about it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Davidson has great performance here a does Bill Burr and Steve Buscemi. This movie isn't a Hollywood production in how those feel mostly forced. This movie really just seems like a camera crew follows Davidson around in his real life. I dig it
Raw
The film is unapologetically introspective and raw. It feels amateurish at times, but overall it really works for the story that is being told. More of a drama than a comedy, but with some truly funny moments.
If you like pete davidson and are lost and in your 20's
Which I am, you will most certainly relate to at least one part of this movie, and that in itself makes it worthy of a watch.
Refreshing
You can't watch this movie without patience, it is a really really slow burn. But unlike blockbuster trash that's constantly served - everything serves a purpose to the plot. Life is not a 90 minute show. And this movie isn't about runtime or show. It has a message, it has motif, and it feels like reading a classic. Great, honest job.
Did you know
- TriviaSteve Buscemi, who plays the veteran firefighter Papa, really did serve as a firefighter for a period during his early 20s. In a 2000 "Salon" interview with Stephen Lemons, Buscemi said he was with Engine 55 in Manhattan's Little Italy neighborhood from 1980 to 1984, when he quit to pursue acting full-time. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Buscemi (by then a well-known movie star) returned to Engine 55 to help search through the rubble of the World Trade Center looking for survivors or remains. In June 2020, Buscemi told "Entertainment Weekly"'s Derek Lawrence that "The King of Staten Island" was the first time in his acting career that he had ever portrayed a firefighter.
- GoofsAccording to the timeline of the movie, a large part of this would have taken place during late fall and winter, such as plans to visit Ray's parents for Thanksgiving and Scott talking to his sister at the Halloween party--but the weather is summer-like for the entire movie.
