The Adventures of Kathlyn (1913)

Trivia

The Adventures of Kathlyn

Edit
This is considered to be the first true "cliffhanger" serial. Many early serials were more like what would today be called a series--each episode's story was self-contained. However, each episode of this serial had a suspenseful ending (i.e., a "cliffhanger"), and viewers had to return to the theater to watch the next chapter and see how the characters escaped the danger in which they were left.
CHAPTER TITLES: 1. The Unwelcome Throne (1913); 2. The Two Ordeals (1914); 3. The Temple of the Lion (1914); 4. The Royal Slave (1914); 5. A Colonel in Chains (1914); 6. Three Bags of Silver (1914); 7. The Garden of Brides (1914); 8. The Cruel Crown (1914); 9. The Spellbound Multitude (1914); 10. The Warrior Maid (1914); 11. The Forged Parchment (1914); 12. The King's Will (1914); 13. The Court of Death (1914).
The first episode was released in three reels. Subsequent episodes were two reels each.
While the parts were unfolding in theaters, the Tribune of Chicago, the city where the thriller was filmed, offered readers a serialized version of the story.
