- Title Card: [shortly after young Marise's father, the cobbler, has died] In scarcely a week the ties of a lifetime were severed - - and Marise, impoverished and alone, was to go to her next of kin.
- Jean Leonnec: [at the train station, after he and Marise have just arrived in Paris from Vivonne] I'll inquire where we can be married. I won't be long.
- [heads off, leaving Marise behind to wait for him...]
- Bo-Bo: [at night, as Jean is standing on the bank of the Seine, peering into the dark waters] The water's cold, son.

- Title Card: [hiding out at Marise's place, after Jean has been shot and wounded by a policeman] For weeks his wound and his fear of the police kept him there, while Marise tended and watched over him like a faithful dog.
- Jean Leonnec: [In the hospital, kneeling and praying at Marise's bedside] Merciful Father, hear me, a sinner - bring her back to me.
- Jean Leonnec: [continues, now addressing Marise] You can't die... You must live... I'll make it up to you for all these years... I love you... I love you -...
- Vivonne Postman: Come quickly - - it is the cobbler.
