What appears on the page is not always what appears on the screen. The screenwriter has most times defined what he/she hopes to see translated, but that’s not always the case (and when it isn’t, it’s usually for the worse). However, sometimes a film will morph from the pen to the multiplex in a post-faithful state that exceeds expectations. One such film is The Pit (1981), a Canadian made, Us lensed flick that started out as a psychological breakdown of a delusional little boy, and ended up in B Movie Heaven, where it is personally fanned and fed grapes by Ed Wood and William Castle on a daily basis. There’s no other film quite like it.

Sony’s annual Spring Fever event guarantees variety and excellence to the games on tap. Last year’s outing gave Helldivers, Titan Souls, Axiom Verge, and Hotline Miami 2 the limelight, but 2016’s showcase has retired the old moniker. To celebrate the first, and third-party developers working on several high-profile PlayStation 4 games, Sony rebranded the experience.
The new event name: Launch Party.
The PlayStation Store Launch Party will follow a familiar pattern, releasing one digital PS4 title each week until the campaign runs its course. Setting an example for the rest of the lineup, Salt and Sanctuary ushers in the six-week spectacle next Tuesday.
Ska Studios remained adamant that Salt and Sanctuary would be ready when it’s ready. Fans waited 17 months (who’s counting?) since the game’s announcement, so what’s another couple days? Players should expect “deep combat and rich RPG elements, all set in a cursed realm of forgotten cities,...

It’s that time of the year again, as Sony is spotlighting several anticipated new digital titles as part of their annual Spring Fever sale, which will run for a massive 8 weeks, which is double the length of the Spring Fever sale from last year.
Starting next week with the release of Helldivers, each week, until the end of April, Sony will be highlighting some of the more unique digital titles set for release over the next few weeks. These include the likes of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, Axiom Verge, Shovel Knight and more. PlayStation Plus members will even receive an additional 10% discount on each title during their respective launch weeks, so all the more reason to check them out.
In addition to the discounts offered on each new release, Sony will also be discounting several popular video game and film franchises each week during the Spring Fever sale.

This week, Maryland's Frederick News-Post has the profile of Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" horses you didn't know you needed. In it, we learn everything a human being could possibly want to know about the video's majestic Andalusians. Their names? Chico and Paco. Their home? Mount Airy's Spring Fever Farm, a six-hour drive from the haunted Long Island mansion that served as the set (and has since burned down in a "mystery fire"). Their ambition? To be the finest onscreen horses in the country, at least according to their owner, Diana Beuchert, who considers their role in the music video their "big break."Other fascinating tidbits the profile reveals: Both the horses and their owner were forbidden from discussing the shoot. "[My agent] said, 'You cannot breathe a word of this to anyone; it's Taylor Swift and it’s her music video,'" Beuchert recalled ... "I just about dropped the phone." One...

Eli Roth has announced a remake of Cabin Fever.
The writer-director of the 2002 horror film will serve as executive producer on the movie.
Travis Zariwny (Intruder) will direct, using the same script as the original.
Cabin Fever centres around a group of young friends who rent a remote cabin in the woods.
All hell breaks loose when they begin to fall victim to a horrifying flesh-eating virus.
Teen Wolf's Gage Golightly, Dustin Ingram, Samuel Davis, Matthew Daddario and Nadine Crocker will star in the remake.
Roth was not involved in the poorly received 2009 sequel Cabin Fever: Spring Fever and 2014 prequel Cabin Fever: Patient Zero.
Cabin Fever will begin shooting this week in Portland, Oregon.

Eli Roth’s 2002 horror comedy Cabin Fever is getting a remake, with the original movie’s writer-director Roth returning as executive producer. He won’t have to do much writing this time, though: The plan is to use the exact same Roth-Randy Pearlstein script that was shot in 2002, and with a cast already moved in, it puts the project on the fast track. Shooting begins this week in Portland, Or.
The new version will star Teen Wolf‘s Gage Golightly, Dustin Ingram, Samuel Davis, Matthew Daddario and Nadine Crocker. Travis Zariwny (Intruder) is directing. Armory Films’ Chris Lemole and Tim Zajaros and Contend’s Evan Astrowsky will produce, and Armory and Pelican Point Media are financing. Roth will exec produce with Cassian Elwes, Ike and Jaclyn Ann Suri, and Peter Fruchtman.
Elwes and CAA will handle domestic sales for Cabin Fever and Voltage international sales at the upcoming American Film Market.

We all remember the controversy that surrounded the production of Cabin Fever 2, where director Ti West was met with overwhelming studio-interference, to the point that he tried to have his name removed from the project. I don’t have the second film, but there is no denying that it is “bad”. Still, though it had a somewhat entertaining quality, even if it was a bastardized version of what it was originally intended. After that, there was always talk of a new sequel, and even a reboot, and now that a sequel has actually been produced, it seems as though, instead of making a film that connections to Patient Zero, like they originally intended, they’re going with a reboot of the series instead. Nevertheless, Patient Zero exists, so how does it stack up against the first two films? Well, it is definitely better than Spring Fever, but there is a catch.

Often controversial Chinese filmmaker Lou Ye delivers one of his finest films with Blind Massage, a delicately observed and artfully directed ensemble drama, based on the novel of the same name by Bi Feiyu. Putting aside, at least for the time being, the intensely sexualized scenarios that marked some of his previous films (Summer Palace, Spring Fever, Love and Bruises, Mystery), Lou immerses us in a unique world - that of the blind - that's never been captured on film in quite this way. Sighted professional actors playing blind, including some Lou regulars, mesh seamlessly with actual non-sighted and partially-sighted amateurs to create a broad canvas encompassing several stories that are all engrossing and beautifully rendered.Blind Massage begins with an offscreen narrator (who is heard...

In all fairness, director Kaare Andrews could have shown colonoscopy footage for an hour and a half and it still would have entertained viewers longer than Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever managed to – but our ambitious auteur goes above and beyond by delivering a sequel more in line with Roth’s original cult phenomenon. Sure, Rider Strong doesn’t drop in for another “explosive” cameo, but back once again is Roth’s flesh-eating virus, and this time it’s ready for the big leagues. Cabin Fever: Patient Zero is a puss-ridden, grotesque, splattery bit of biological horror, and while it lacks the indie charms that wooed franchise fans initially, Andrews’ pseudo-reboot could be the start of something nasty – rivaling Roth’s signature brand of stomach-turning visual horrors.
Since ruining a friendly vacation and eating through a prom, officials are still struggling to contain the hungry virus causing so much devastation.

Eleven years after Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever, and five years after Ti West’s Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, horror’s tiniest serial killer is back, with a new installment from Kaare Andrews, a director probably best known for his 2013 ABCs of Death segment.
Officially a prequel rather than a sequel, Cabin Fever: Patient Zero attempts to provide an origin story for the virus, while still delivering enough laughs and gore to keep fans of the previous two films happy. However, like its predecessor Spring Fever, this latest strain of the franchise lacks the infectious inventiveness and sheer bite that made Roth’s first film a cult classic: in horror terms, think mild rash, rather than full-on flesh-eating fury.
Employing a dual narrative technique, Andrews’s film splits the action into two distinct storylines. One of these centers on a remote research facility, where scientists battle to find a...

Once Upon a Time in the West.
Stepping onto the sun-scorched plains of the wild, wild west — or, more accurately, the PlayStation Store — this week is Image & Form’s 2D platformer, SteamWorld Dig. Much like its unassuming protagonist, the company’s side-scrolling adventure has clambered up the gaming hierarchy over the last six months. Once a 3Ds eShop exclusive, the digital mining expedition is currently available through PC platforms and, more recently, on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita as part of Sony’s annual Spring Fever promotion.
Upon first glance, it’d be easy to dismiss SteamWorld Dig as a smorgasbord of different genres. From Spelunky’s loot-mongering to the resource management found in Terraria, the game undoubtedly draws from other titles in the side-scrolling genre. However, after several wondrous playthroughs, I soon discovered Image & Form’s title to be much, much more than the sum of its assimilated parts — the wild west,...

From the harsh, sun-scorched plains of the western frontier to PlayStation platforms, Swedish indie studio Image & Form confirmed today that its mining platformer, SteamWorld Dig, will make its way onto PS4 and Ps Vita on March 18th and 19th in North America and Europe, respectively.
Initially released through the Nintendo eShop back in August of last year, the indie gem garnered critical acclaim for its atmospheric setting and grizzled protagonist, Rusty. After making your way to the humble village of Tumbleton, players are tasked with unearthing resources and the buried secrets of the town in typical, side-scrolling fashion.
Additionally, SteamWorld Dig also features a variety of abilities that users can unlock in exchange for excavated cash and gems — including wall-climbing and the ever-useful steam punch. Undoubtedly, Image & Form’s 2D western draws from games such as Terraria, given the inventory management and retro aesthetic.

Director: Kaare Andrews. Review: Adam Wing. What's that you say, Cabin Fever 3? What the hell happened to Cabin Fever 2? Spring Fever, you say? Nope. Still doesn't ring a bell. In all fairness, you'd be forgiven for missing the second part of this unwanted trilogy altogether. Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever was a mess of a movie, a film so terrifyingly bad even the director disowned it. To be fair to Ty West (The Innkeepers), the finished article was nothing like the film he envisaged, having abandoned the film at the start of post-production, but the studio stepped in and Cabin Fever 2 emerged, the product of too many cooks and not enough good taste. The original entry in the series, directed by Eli Roth, was one of the better cabin-in-the-woods movies, with unpredictable twists, a welcome dose of homage, sharp humour and gore aplenty. There's something to be said for simplicity. Not to start off on a rant, but a lot of "Aaa" games today have a whole lot going on with them. Video games continually push the limits of what players can do in games, from multiple levels of character customizations, to intricately designed levels that force players to use every part of their brain, even going so far as to create entire worlds to explore: games today have a lot going on with them. Again, there is something to be said for simplicity. "Thomas Was Alone" is simple, still manages to be compelling, and is even beautiful at times.
At first glance, there's not really much to "Thomas Was Alone," just some squares that feel the need to get "up and to the right." And really, that's most of the game. You play as Thomas, a red rectangle, who finds "himself" trapped in an odd situation,...

Subtitled fare always seems to consume me in September and early October as the Foreign Language Submission List for Oscar takes shape (it's not quite official yet but the submission deadline has passed). This is also the time of year when The Golden Horse, the preeminent Chinese/Taiwanese film awards, announce their nominations. Rather than a huge Academy vote, the Golden Horse is determined by a jury. Andy Lau who starred in Hong Kong’s Oscar submission A Simple Life last year and is best known internationally for two hits from the Aughts (The House of Flying Daggers and Infernal Affairs which was later remade into The Departed) is the president of this year’s jury.
Caught in the Web, China's Oscar submission, was apparently not eligible.

She got her break in the '90s TV series My So-Called Life and then appeared in a diverse slate of movies until returning to series TV last year in Showtime's critically acclaimed Homeland -- in which she plays a CIA agent who suffers from bipolar disorder. Here are five things you may not know about Claire Danes.
1. Said she knew as a child that she wanted to be a performer when she saw Madonna on TV. "I understood that performing could be one's vocation and I thought, yeah!" Danes once told the New York Times.
2. Completed two years at Yale University, her father's alma mater, studying psychology. Her letter of recommendation was written by director Oliver Stone, her director on the 1997 film U Turn.

Opening this year’s Un Certain Regard programme, Mystery returns festival veteran Lou Ye to Cannes for the fourth time, having screened Purple Butterfly, Summer Palace and Spring Fever in the main competition in past years, and after being banned from filmmaking for five years by the Chinese government. Though he is on less provocative form here than previously, he does still sneak in a criticism of the Chinese justice system and the somewhat distasteful practice of private settlements overriding criminal prosecution. His story here focuses on Lu Jie (Hao Lei), a happy housewife whose life is shattered when she discovers that her husband (Hao Qin) is having an affair. The story isn’t quite that conventional however, as it is framed by an explosive event – the death of her husband’s mistress under the wheels of a young rich playboy’s car – and when murder is suggested, the film quickly sets about solving the mystery of...

Last week on Gossip Girl, a faux G.G. got investigative and ruthless, a trying-too-hard couple turned British, and a shocking revelation found Chuck Bass speechless, but not before telling his two-timing mom like it is.

The internets gave us first looks at Wild Bunch's upcoming Croisette-bound slate (Ken Loach and Cristian Mungiu) but a trio of Efm sales titles that might also break into the line-up (or worse case be kept for Venice) appear to have gone unnoticed. Though I thought Lou Ye's last picture, the 2011 Toronto Film Fest preemed Love and Bruises was a grating, basically unpleasant piece of art-house cinema, I'm indeed curious as to how the auteur went about creating this murder mystery. After his five year ban, Mystery is his film shot in China revolves around an investigation into the mysterious death of a young woman involved with a married businessman. I believe thesps Hao Lei (Summer Palace) and Qin Hao (Spring Fever) are in the final pic below.

Showtime has announced the return of three of their popular TV series -- Nurse Jackie, The Big C, and The Borgias -- earlier than expected. Rather than spread them out, all three shows will return on Sunday, April 8th.
The Big C is back for season three and The Borgias returns for a second season, with 10 episodes each. Nurse Jackie is back for a fourth round. It's unclear how many episodes have been ordered but all three previous seasons have had a dozen installments apiece.

"When foreign directors make films in Paris, the result is often a predictable mix of cafés, croissants and obligatory shots of the Eiffel Tower at night," writes Jordan Mintzer in the Hollywood Reporter. "In the French-language drama Love and Bruises, Chinese auteur Lou Ye (Summer Palace) steers clear of such clichés, only to deliver a whole other brand of them in this sordid, ultimately bland tale of amour fu between a Beijing student and a banlieue thug, played by A Prophet star Tahar Rahim. Filled with Lou's usual sexcapades, and with enough rapes and scuffles to make the City of Light look like the South Bronx, Bruise should pound only a handful of arthouses after its Venice Days opening berth."
"Lou's sexually and politically charged Summer Palace (2006) led the Chinese government to restrict him from filmmaking for five years, a ruling he defied by making the frisky 2009 melodrama Spring Fever,...

Festival season heading your way out there in the dark. Even if you only experience film festivals through blog mania for the same, that's still something. That's how most of us experience Cannes each year, yes? This year Tfe will be doing a lot from Nyff as it's close to home (5 stops on the subway close!) and quite inexpensive since there's already a bed to sleep in: one's own! But we have lined up a few foreign correspondents to give you bits and bobs from Venice (Aug 31st-Sept 10th), Toronto (Sept 8th-18th), and London (Oct 12th-27th). Quite often commenting is light on film festival pieces, which one assumes is because of the unfamiliar factor of the films, though sometimes it's quite distressing -- I even drew you cartoons from Nashville and there was nary a peep! -- so some feedback would be greatly appreciated:
What interests you and what doesn't about film festivals?...

Like most movie nerds, I love to make lists. My last one covered my favorite 50 horror films from 2000 - 2009, and this new one covers something even sillier: the 1980s "teen sex comedy." Only someone who has lived through the decade could suffer through this project, but I do hope it brings back fond memories of bad movies, naked boobies, bad comedy, and you being really embarrassed if you watched any of these titles with your mom.Below you'll find the dregs: #50 to #26. Part 2 (coming soon!) will have the better flicks. "Better" being a relative term here. Enjoy!Countdown: 50 - 41 50. Spring fever's hit Hollywood. Stars are setting aside their LBDs in favor of bold, bright colors. Taking it one step even further, Emma Stone (in Lanvin), Olivia Wilde (in Gucci), Camilla Belle (in Gucci and Roc Nation) and Zoe Saldana (in Prabal Gurung) are popping on the crimson carpet in multiple highlighter hues like coral, fuschia and teal. So what does our Fashion Police panel think of this celebrity color blocking? Embrace the rainbow! This Skittles-style fashion trend gets a unanimous "Gotta have it!" from the color-lovin' crew.

Analysis: A year after "Thelma and Louise" came "The Living End", an independent film which had a similar premise but made the protagonists two gay HIV+ men. So far I've collected six separate 2010 compilation videos looking back at the this year's collection of films. To the best of my knowledge, these six videos include clips from 303 films and together they total 34:34. I have included the complete list of films on the second page if you are interested. Let me know if I'm missing any, but I think it's pretty safe to say if you liked a film in 2010 one of these following videos will feature it.
So, have a watch and leave your thoughts on which one is your favorite in the comments below and if you find another one online that I should add to the collection shoot me an email.

Highly acclaimed Sixth Generation Chinese director Wang Xiaoshuai returns with his latest work “Chongqing Blues”, completing the multiple award winning ‘City Trilogy’ which began with “Beijing Bicycle” in 2001 and “Shanghai Dreams” in 2005. Although very much in his grounded, naturalistic style, the film is most accessible to date, having a notably higher budget than his previous works and boasting a top cast headlined by Wang Xueqi (“Bodyguards and Assassins”) and Fan Bingbing (“Wheat”), with support from Qin Hao (“Spring Fever”) and up and coming young actors Zi Yi and Li Feier, The film has been another hit with critics around the world, being the only Mainland China entry at Cannes in 2010, and having played a variety of festivals including London in October. Based upon a real life incident, the film is unsurprisingly set in Chongqing, and follows a sailor called Lin Quanhai (Wang Xueqi), who returns home after 15 years of absence...

If you were trapped under a rock this year (it happens) take six minutes to watch this YouTube short. Half music video, half trailer remix, “Filmography 2010″ cuts together the year’s hits, flops and everything in between to catchy music.
Even if you’re a jaded movie buff who hates year end schmaltz, the recap should pluck your heartstrings. So many great and touching moments this year, it’s enough to make you wonder how the Golden Globes managed to totally blow their nominations.
But we digress. Check out the video after the jump.

Every December these ‘best of the year’ video montages make the last 12 months of cinema seem infinitely more pleasant to sit through than they actually were. Here’s the first of many that are sure to be made before the sand in the hourglass runs out on 2010, this one from a gal going by the name of Gen I, who sent in this effort to /film.
There’s 270 movies in this montage below ranging from all the well known blockbusters, to smaller docs, foreign fare and even some Japanese anime! I can’t begin to imagine how long or how much skill it takes to put something as high-quality as this together…

Now that we're about two weeks till the end of 2010, the film industry will be looking back to figure out the best movies of the year and will pick winners during the many awards shows. Today, we have a video that captures 2010 pretty well by showing scenes from the year's 270 films, including some that have yet to hit theaters. There will likely be plenty more of these montages in the next few weeks, but the video is definitely one of the better ones that I have seen. Check out the six-minute video below, in addition to a full list of all the films that were used. Questions: How many of the films listed did you actually see in full? It's getting closer and closer to the end of the year, and we've already seen a couple top 10 lists and critic choice awards announced. Since we began posting "best of the year" video montages a few years back, it seems a lot of new wannabe video editors have emerged. Maybe the software has become cheaper or more accessible, or maybe the coverage on sites like /Film and other movie blogs garnered interest in the task. Last year I received a dozen or so best of videos, most of them were not anything we would share on the site. I think we posted three in total last year, two of which were created by video editors we've featured in previous years [1]. Today I was sent the first "best of 2010" video montage of the season, from a video editor named Gen I. I'll admit that while I was expecting the worst, I came out pleasantly surprised.

The Golden Horse Awards were held last night. They're often thought of as the Chinese Oscars because the tradition goes back the furthest and honors a wide pool of Chinese language films from multiple countries (China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, etcetera). Though neither Monga, Taiwan's submission for Oscar's Foreign Language Film competition, nor Aftershock (China's submission), were nominated for Best Picture they both had multiple nominations .
Monga, a popular youth crime drama we've mentioned before, won Best Actor for 28 year old Ethan Ruan (left), who amusingly brought a cardboard cutout of his co-star who was not nominated. And yes he brought the cutout with him onstage when he won. He said...
