What apps are available on different streaming devices?
Image
Which device platforms support your favorite streaming apps? We’ve done the deep app dive on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV.

If you are a new cord-cutter or considering switching to a different streaming TV device, app availability should be your top priority. After all, what if your favorite apps aren’t supported on the new platform? Fortunately, the big three streaming device platforms — Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV — support the vast majority of popular streaming apps. Roku leads the pack with over 27,000 apps (Roku calls them “Channels”), followed by Amazon Fire TV with more than 21,000. Apple TV offers around 12,000, less than half of Roku’s total.

Those are obviously overwhelming numbers, so we’ve broken them down to a more manageable list of around 60 popular streaming apps for comparison. Your favorites are most likely included regardless of platform, though there are some outliers depending on which platform you choose.

These Free Streamers Have Better Horror Movies than Netflix
Image
At The Streamable, we love watching movies and TV for free, especially if we don’t have to sit through ads. Tubi is great, but seeing an ad for car insurance in the middle of your movie tends to kill the vibe. As we race to Halloween, we looked up all the best scary movies and found that a huge number were streaming ad-free on Kanopy, which is free if your library participates. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hoopla is another free streamer that just added a major horror partner.

Your library probably partners with either Kanopy or Hoopla (or both!), giving you an unexpectedly great package of ad-free entertainment.

Use Kanopy for the Best Horror Selection

My jaw dropped when I saw how many A+ horror movies were available ad-free on Kanopy. You can see 48(!) of Metacritic’s best-reviewed horror films.

Kanopy gives you recent horror masterpieces like “Hereditary,...

Toei Animation's hit Spring 2024 original anime series, Girls Band Cry, is finally coming to North America. However, many anime fans are dismayed after learning that they will only have the option to purchase digital copies of the episodes -- and from a seemingly bizarre selection of platforms.

On X (formerly Twitter), Toei Animation recently unveiled a special launch trailer for Girls Band Cry, announcing that it will become available on "digital stations" starting Aug. 13, 2024. The same day, @MangaMoguraRE, a popular anime and manga news hub on X, provided additional details about the anime's North American release format. "Girls Band Cry will finally release in English...but not via your usual suspects aka streaming platforms. For some reason, it is only available as a digital purchase via Amazon, Hoopla and...the Microsoft Store."

Fungirl: You Are Revolting by Elizabeth Pich
Image
I’ve gotten out of the habit of reading individual comics issues – because I first got out of the habit of buying them. There were a lot of factors there, but an already-ebbing stream turned to nothing after the 2011 flood destroyed all of my existing floppies. Since then, if it’s not in book form, I basically don’t read it.

But my library app – Hoopla , another silly name because everything Internetty is required to have a silly name – includes individual issues, all mixed in their general “Comics” section in a way that sometimes makes it hard to tell if something is a book or a floppy. So I now can read floppy comics, at least some of them, about as regularly as I want.

I still haven’t really done it much.

But I did read the big collection of Fungirl comics by Elizabeth Pich recently, and noticed there...

Here's Why We Trust True Detective: Night Country To Go Full Supernatural
Image
This post contains spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country."

"True Detective: Night Country" is starting to look more and more like a horror show. Two episodes into the season's six-part run, things in Ennis, Alaska just keep getting stranger. The severed tongue of Indigenous activist Anne appeared on a research facility's floor six years after she died. The scientists at said research facility (who remind us a lot of horror classic "The Thing") ended up dead in the snow, naked and frozen with ruptured eardrums and scratched-out eyes. At least two characters have heard a voice whisper "She's awake" in their minds, and a little girl is drawing pictures of a local folk figure — a woman in the snow with bloody, dripping hands. On top of all that, the ghost of Rust Cohle's dad may or may not be out in the wilderness, possibly worshipping the sky.

At the risk of stating the obvious,...

10 Best Art Styles in Anime
Image
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Studio Ghibli films have some of the most recognizable art styles in anime. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners makes use of Studio Trigger's brightly colored, intense visuals in its futuristic setting. Unlike other horror stories, Mononoke uses vivid imagery to unsettle its viewers.

An anime's art style is one of the first things to stand out to viewers. Unlike manga, which uses stationary, black-and-white artwork, anime has more freedom in how it uses its visuals to attract an audience. Some anime, like Devilman Crybaby, are appealing for their unique, but not necessarily attractive, art styles. This is different from many of the other series that use colorful visuals to attract attention.

It's important to draw a distinction between art style and animation. Art style refers to how the anime looks in still frames, and includes character and background designs, color palettes, and overall esthetics. Animation, on the other hand,...

"So it’s Been Out Since October”: Film Fans Shocked To Learn Hyped 2023 Movie Has Been On Streaming For Free
Image
Cat Person, directed by Susanna Fogel, is based on the popular New Yorker short story by Kristen Roupenian, telling a story that highlights the horrors of modern dating for women. A new tweet reveals that the movie is streaming for free on Hoopla after hitting theaters in October and making a disastrous $338,541. Netflix offered to buy the film for $5 million but was refused as the studio thought a theatrical release would be the smarter move financially.

Cat Person is available to stream online for free from a surprising website, and film fans are shocked. Directed by Susanna Fogel, the movie is based on a popular short story of the same name by Kristen Roupenian from 2017, which itself is loosely inspired by real events. Cat Person had its premiere at Sundance in January of this year, telling a story about college sophomore Margot (Emilia Jones), who discovers the true horrors of...

12 Best Selena Gomez Movies & TV Shows
Image
The impressive list of Selena Gomez movies and TV shows has grown over her lengthy career in show business, and she keeps getting better with every subsequent role. There aren't many people as young as Gomez who can trace their acting careers back through three different decades, but the multi-talented performer is one of those rare cases. She originally got her start on TV screens as a child on Barney & Friends and her career was launched into high gear through other children's programs. Gomez is unique among Hollywood stars because she was able to successfully shed her child-star image, and branch out into more mature roles.

Not limited to acting alone, Selena Gomez has also established a successful music career for herself and has even produced hit shows like Netflix's 13 Reasons Why. Though she is a star in her own right and has led TV shows and movies, Gomez's...

10 Movies That Nobody Knows Are Connected To Another Film
Image
If there is one thing that is popular in Hollywood, it is shared cinematic universes and movies that connect. This has made the Marvel Cinematic Universe the most famous example of crossing movies over throughout multiple iterations. However, there have been other franchises to try something similar, such as the DC Universe and the Monster Universe with King Kong, Godzilla, and other giant monsters. However, there are a lot more shared universes out there that most audiences are not even aware of, movies that somehow connect to each other in small ways that are not always made clear.

Most shared universes are remembered for being part of giant franchises like the MCU but sometimes, filmmakers decided to connect to movies and nobody really notices until later. Whether it's through small cameos or merely one recurring character or a reference to events from another movie, there are many movies that connect...

Every Colin Farrell Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Irish actor Colin Farrell has been an ever-present star in Hollywood over the last two decades, but what are his best and his worst movies? Having played leading roles in smaller-budget movies since 1999, Farrell gained international recognition after appearing in Steven Spielberg's Minority Report alongside Tom Cruise. He continued to star in a range of independent films and blockbusters throughout the 2000s and 2010s and is one of the most sought-after actors today.

Colin Farrell is best known for his roles in action, crime, and comedy movies, with his natural cheeky charisma often landing the Dublin native roles as the lovable rogue. But by no means is Farrell a one-note actor, as he has proven throughout his career that he can turn his talents toward drama, romance, and horror. Farrell shows no sign of slowing down, with the actor most recently appearing in contrasting roles in the superhero box...

How to Watch ‘The Rehearsal': Where Does the Nathan Fielder Show Air and What Time Is the Finale?
Image
It doesn’t feel like hyperbole or even a matter of opinion to call “The Rehearsal” one of the most original, off-the-wall shows to debut in years. The proof lies in how difficult it can be to describe: it has elements of a reality show, but not a single variable is left to chance; it’s darkly funny, but also deeply sad; and, five episodes in, it remains unclear whether the audience is in on the joke, or if we’re the butt of it.

If you’re not caught up, “The Rehearsal” is the second series from “Nathan For You” creator/director/star Nathan Fielder. The HBO series is built around a deceptively simple premise: Fielder wants to help people (who responded to his ominous Craigslist ad) prepare for important moments by rehearsing them to perfection. He does this by measures of escalating absurdity – constructing a full-size model of...
