Quotes

The Story of Temple Drake

Edit
  • Maid: That Mr. Judge would sure know more about his daughter if he did her laundry!
  • Temple Drake: Why do you keep the baby in the wood box?
  • Ruby Lemar: So the rats don't get it.
  • Temple Drake: Oh, come on, honey. Be nice, now.
  • Toddy Gowan: Nice? That's what you always say. It ain't fair! Fire a man all up and - poof - put him out.
  • Temple Drake: Do I do that? Sure 'nuff?
  • Aunt Jennie: 'Didn't hear a word I said, did you?
  • Stephen Benbow: That's possible, Auntie
  • Aunt Jennie: I was talking about Temple Drake.
  • Stephen Benbow: Yes, I know. That's why I didn't listen.
  • Ruby Lemar: [to Temple Drake] Now you're satisfied. You got 'em all fightin' over ya. You nice women. I know your kind. You get a kick out of playin' with kids. Burnin' their gas. Eatin' their food. Spendin' their money. And whatdya give em? Always got away with it before, ain't ya? And now you're scared. 'Cause these ain't kids, they're men. If one of em laid a finger on ya, you'd faint.
  • Temple Drake: Do I? Sure 'nuff. Just me? Men are so funny. I said no. Of course, I like you - dreadfully. Well, I'm not a wrestler! You! No. Hey, you're too rough! Let go! Good night.
  • Temple Drake: Darling, won't you unhook me?
  • Temple Drake: [kissing in the car, comes up for air] That's enough! Let's go in.
  • Toddy Gowan: No. Not till you promise.
  • Temple Drake: You're drunk.
  • Toddy Gowan: Sure I am. But, it isn't the gin.
  • [pulls Temple close]
  • Toddy Gowan: How's about it, sugar?
  • Temple Drake: Oh, Toddy! Take me somewhere. Anywhere! I want to get away from here.
  • Toddy Gowan: Say, what you need is a drink.
  • Temple Drake: Yes. A drink! Lots of drinks!
  • Toddy Gowan: Yeah, Drake!
  • Tommy Bassett: You hear? Callin' me 'Jack'. He calls everybody: 'Jack'. My names Tommy. Dog, if he ain't better than a circus.
  • Ruby Lemar: You putty-faced little fool.
  • Ruby Lemar: I ain't lettin' Lee run after ya. He was mine before you ever come along. They had him in Leavenworth once - for shootin' a soldier over one of them foreign women. I got him out. And how do you think I paid? Sure, you wouldn't do it, would ya?
  • Ruby Lemar: I could tell it was Trigger by the smell of that stuff on his hair.
  • Aunt Jennie: I ought to know. I've seen three generations of 'em in my time. They're a stiff neck lot, most of 'em. Proud and all that. There's a wild streak in 'em. Every now and then one of 'em comes along like Temple - with somethin' bad in 'em. Somethin' wrong. Maybe Temple'll get over it; but, there's not one of 'em thats had it, didn't end up in the gutter!
  • Temple Drake: You can't be arrested for dreaming.
  • Temple Drake: It's like there were two me's. One of 'em says: Yes. Yes. Quick. Don't let me get away.
  • Stephen Benbow: And the other?
  • Temple Drake: I won't tell you. But, what it wants or does or what'll happen to it, I don't know myself! All I know is I hate it!
  • Tommy Bassett: Remember when that old dog come out from under the house. Sniffed Trigger's heels, just like any dog. Durned if he didn't whoop out that little automatic and shot that hound dog dead as a doornail. Jes an old dog. Wouldn't hurt a flea. I know, because he was my dog.
  • Toddy Gowan: What? Where is? Where is?
  • Porter: Who? Who is you?
  • Toddy Gowan: How did I get here?
  • Porter: You askin' me, white man? Blood, ain't it.
  • Toddy Gowan: Yeah. Say, say, where is this? What town am I in?
  • Porter: Dixon, boss.
  • Toddy Gowan: Dixon?
  • Stephen Benbow: Temple? Temple Drake! What are you doing here? Are you? Did he?
  • Trigger: Poor lug. Bustin' in here with that Frank Merriwell stuff.
  • Trigger: He's stuck on you ain't he? You can tell that. You came through for me. You stood up for me against one of your own kind. Honest, I never thought you'd do it! Sometimes I thought you kinda looked down on me and hated me too - when we wasn't together. Honest, babe, that's how I had you figured. I had you wrong. Say, when you kissed me, in front of him and him stuck on ya - that subpoena don't mean a thing. We'll go to the big town until this case moves off. Lights. Music. Plenty of rocks on your pretty hands and - hey, what are you puttin' your hat on for?
  • Temple Drake: I'm leaving.
  • Trigger: You're what? I don't get you. You mean you're leavin' me? Hey, it was a rip, huh? You put on an act for me so I wouldn't croak the boyfriend - is that it?
  • Trigger: Kissin' me and double-crossin' me and I fell for it. I got gabby and spilled my brains and you givin' me the laugh all the time.
  • Temple Drake: No I wasn't.
  • Trigger: And now you're going to put the finger on me.
  • Temple Drake: I'm not going back. I'm never going back. Nobody'll ever see me again. I'll just - disappear.
  • Stephen Benbow: Gentlemen of the jury, I will not attempt to outline the defense. But, after you have heard it, I know that you will find the defendant, Lee Goodwin, not guilty. Will Miss Temple Drake take the stand.
  • Stephen Benbow: Your family, the Drakes, have lived here for generations?
  • Temple Drake: Yes.
  • Temple Drake: How long?
  • Stephen Benbow: Since before the war.
  • Stephen Benbow: The Civil War?
  • Temple Drake: Yes.
  • Stephen Benbow: Honey, will you be honest with me, just once?
  • Temple Drake: Of course.
  • Stephen Benbow: Really? Man to man?
  • Temple Drake: Yes, Steve.
  • Stephen Benbow: Marry me.
  • Temple Drake: No.
  • Stephen Benbow: Why not?
  • Temple Drake: Why do you have to ask that?
  • Stephen Benbow: I want to know.
  • Temple Drake: Perhaps I like you too much.
  • Stephen Benbow: And love me too little?
  • Temple Drake: It isn't you Steve, it's me.
  • Stephen Benbow: What do you mean?
  • Temple Drake: Why, I'm no good.
  • Stephen Benbow: Don't be silly.
  • Temple Drake: Why, I'm not. Let's not talk about it anymore.
  • Stephen Benbow: But Temple!
  • Temple Drake: I can't explain. It's just me, it's something inside me.
  • Court Clerk: Put your right hand on the Bible please. Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?
  • Temple Drake: So help me God.
  • Stephen Benbow: Your name?
  • Temple Drake: Temple Drake!
