This film was based on a play that ran at Broadway's Cort Theatre from March to May of 1933. Elizabeth Rimplegar, the character played by Claudette Colbert in the movie, was portrayed by 36 year-old Ruth Gordon on stage. This was the same Ruth Gordon who went on to play character roles in movies in later years, including memorable parts in Rosemary's Baby and Harold and Maude.
When Dr. Stevens tells the Rimplegar brothers to think, they poses as "Three wise monkeys" - Douglas cover eyes with his hand, Kenneth cover his ears and Eddie - his mouth.
One of over 700 Paramount Productions, filmed between 1929 and 1949, which were sold to MCA/Universal in 1958 for television distribution, and have been owned and controlled by Universal ever since. Rarely telecast because of its age and the pre-code depression aspects of the story, its earliest documented airings took place in Seattle Monday 18 January 1960 on KIRO (Channel 7), in Omaha 31 August 1960 on KETV (Channel 7) , in Indianapolis 14 November 1960 on WFBM (Channel 6) and in San Antonio 28 December 1960 on KONO (Channel 12). It was released on DVD 23 November 2009 as one of the six titles in Universal's Claudette Colbert Collection.
