A "talky" remake of the silent film Op hoop van zegen (1918). Director Alex Benno, who had been a director's assistant on the 1918 version, decided the recent invention of movie sound warranted a new version of the story, which the audience would be able to understand better. Esther De Boer-van Rijk reprised her role from the 1918 version and the stage play. It was her last film.
