The last film for Marlene Dietrich at Paramount under her seven-year contract with the studio. It was not renewed due to a series of recent flops for her films.
Paramount paid $8,500 for Melchior Lengyel's play. The film length was gradually cut from 2916.94m (11 reels) to 2478.33m (nine reels) after pre-release showings in New York City and six California cities from 25 July 1937 to 13 September 1937.
One of over 700 Paramount Productions, filmed between 1929 and 1949, which were sold to MCA/Universal in 1958 for television distribution and have been owned and controlled by Universal ever since. Its initial telecast took place in Boston Thursday 9 October 1958 on WBZ (Channel 4); it first aired in Los Angeles Sunday 11 January 1959 on KNXT (Channel 2) in Phoenix 16 April 1959 on KVAR (Channel 12), in Seattle 3 July 1959 on KIRO (Channel 7), in Minneapolis 29 August 1959 on WTCN (Channel 11), in Toledo 13 December 1959 on WTOL (Channel 11), in St. Louis 15 December 1959 on KMOX (Channel 4), in Grand Rapids 4 January 1960 on WOOD (Channel 8), in Johnstown 11 April 1960 on WJAC (Channel 6), and in Pittsburgh 6 June 1960 on KDKA (Channel 2). It was released on DVD 27 May 2014 as part of the Universal Vault Series and again 17 May 2016 as part of the Universal Hollywood Icons Collection: Marlene Dietrich.
