William Powell and Luise Rainer in The Emperor's Candlesticks (1937)

Trivia

The Emperor's Candlesticks

Edit
This film did well at the box office, earning MGM a profit of $259,000 ($4,383,000 in 2017) according to studio records.
The third and last film pairing William Powell and Luise Rainer.
Hedy Lamarr was evidently the first actress considered for the role of Countess Olga, which role would have marked her American film debut. Lamarr's screen test being deemed unsatisfactory, Luise Rainer was then offered the Olga role. Presumably pending Rainer's acceptance, veteran actress Gloria Swanson was screen tested for the Olga role, Swanson's test also being deemed unsatisfactory. (Subsequent to Music in the Air (1934), Swanson would make only one full length film: Father Takes a Wife (1941), prior to her comeback vehicle Sunset Boulevard (1950).)
This film's initial telecast took place in Philadelphia Saturday 6 April 1957 on WFIL (Channel 6), followed by New Haven CT 14 April 1957 on WNHC (Channel 8), by Seattle 19 April 1957 on KING (Channel 5), by Altoona PA 21 April 1957 on WFBG (Channel 10), by Portland OR 18 May 1957 on KGW (Channel 8), by Norfolk VA 16 June 1957 on WTAR (Channel 3), and by Miami 21 June 1957 on WCKT (Channel 7); it was first aired in San Francisco 10 March 1958 on KGO (Channel 7), in New York City 25 October 1958 on WCBS (Channel 2), in Los Angeles 21 June 1959 on KTTV (Channel 11), and, finally, in Chicago 26 August 1959 on WBBM (Channel 2).
