Spaghetti was a popular dish at the time, though other pastas were usually found in Italian neighborhoods. Most Americans were mostly familiar with spaghetti and meatballs or macaroni and cheese back then.
The title is based on a popular short story of the same name, first published in 1905 by Ellis Parker Butler.

The evil scientist was a nod to the numerous horror and science fiction features popular at the time.
