This was originally a Cole Porter musical, but the songs were omitted from the film because box-office receipts for musical films at that time were down.
Although released in 2-strip Technicolor, the film only survives in black and white. Contemporary reviews in both the New York Times and Harrison's Reports commented on the poor quality of the color which was "so bad it blurs the vision and hurts the eyes".
This was completed in 1930, but not released until 1931, after most of the songs had been removed because musicals were out of favor with audiences at the time.
The play opened on Broadway in New York City, New York, USA at the Lyric Theatre, 213 W. 42nd St., on 27 November 1929 and closed 5 July 1930 after 254 performances. Helen Broderick, Lester Crawford (the parents of Broderick Crawford) and William Gaxton originated their movie roles in the play. Other opening night cast members included Betty Compton, Jean Del Val, Thurston Hall and Genevieve Tobin.
