The Lady Refuses

Edit
The 1,000 pounds ($5,000) that Sir Gerald offers to pay June would equal $4,550 at the time, which equates to about $92,000 in 2023.
Betty Compson ("June") was 10 years older than John Darrow ("Russell"), and Margaret Livingston ("Berthine") was 12 years older.
The Lady Refuses (1931) had working titles of A Lady for Hire, Children of the Streets, Forgotten Women, Ladies for Hire.
A Film Daily release chart claims that the The Lady Refuses (1931)'s screenplay was taken from Robert Milton and Guy Bolton's "A Lady for Hire," but it is not clear whether this title refers to a screen story or a literary work. All other sources refer to the story as a screen "original."
In 1959, The Lady Refuses (1931) entered the public domain in the United States because the claimants did not renew its copyright registration in the 28th year after publication. The Lady Refuses (1931) available for free download at Internet Archive.
