It seems some people think this movie says things about slavery that are offensive. Perhaps the right way to view it is that the movie says things about how the characters in this movie regard slavery. Characters in a movie are given attitudes and opinions to develop their persona, not as a means to preach to the audience ... though of course that can and does happen. The fact that many slaves suffered greatly does not mean no slaves developed affectionate relationships with the family they served. Depicting the latter in the characters of Ophelia, Joseph & Ezekiel is crucial to the story and not meant as a denial of the great harm that was done.
